Just then, someone knocked twice on the door, and Elena’s voice came from outside. “Anika, are you awake? Come have breakfast.”
Elena was worried Anika would be mistreated by the Brooks family, so she had decided to stay at their house and look after her.
Anika answered Elena and joined them at the table, but the atmosphere was tense and quiet. Katie didn’t even spare Anika a second glance, while Bowen was the only one who spoke to her occasionally.
“Anika, eat more,” Bowen said. “You need to take care of yourself and the baby. Don’t neglect your health.”
Anika nodded with a faint smile and took another bite of pasta. She didn’t put her spoon down until she had finished all the porridge in her bowl. Lately, her pregnancy had given her strong reactions, and her appetite had decreased. Maybe it was also because of Marcel—she hadn’t been sleeping well at night.
“I’m full,” she said. “By the way, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks, Mom—Chayce will be arriving in Douburgh today. I need to pick him up now.”
“Chayce?” Elena looked startled. After thinking for a moment, she remembered: he was the highly skilled doctor Anika had mentioned before, the one who usually lived in Perigoda. He sounded impressive.
“Alright. Go ahead,” Elena said. “Don’t keep him waiting.”
“Okay,” Anika replied, nodding obediently. She quickly put on her coat and headed for the door.
Katie’s hostility was obvious. She rolled her eyes at Elena and slammed her bowl down on the table. “I’m going back to my room!”
At the airport, Anika got out of the car and hurried into the arrivals hall, scanning the crowd for Chayce. After a moment, she finally spotted him walking toward her from the southeast corner.
She rose onto her toes and waved vigorously, calling out, “Chayce!”
Hearing her voice, Chayce looked over, saw Anika, and walked toward her. He gave a brief nod in acknowledgment.

Anika looked at Chayce and smiled shyly. “Chayce, I’m really sorry to bother you again.”
“Oh, it’s fine.” Chayce shook his head. He hadn’t expected to return to Douburgh so soon. “Let’s go straight to the hospital. I heard the patient’s condition is quite serious, so I’ll check on him first.”
“Okay.” Anika felt relieved that Chayce had come. With him there, she finally felt more confident.
She took him to the hospital, and they entered the ward together. Chayce set his bag aside and walked to Marcel’s bedside. He carefully checked Marcel’s eyes and body, then took his pulse. After that, he looked up at Anika.
“He’s a fighter, that’s for sure,” he said. “But the car accident left a blood clot in his head that hasn’t cleared. It’s keeping him unconscious for too long. Still, it’s not permanent—it just needs time.”
Anika’s heart sank. Her pregnancy was already weeks along, and she didn’t know what she would do if Marcel never woke up. The guilt would follow her for the rest of her life.
She grabbed Chayce’s arm and pleaded, “Please, Chayce, you have to save Marcel. He’s like this because of me. I can’t let him go like this…”
