He wanted to wipe her tears away, but he didn’t have the strength. All he could do was speak gently. “Anika, I’m sorry I made you worry. I’m fine now. Don’t cry. You’ve lost so much weight.”
Anika quickly wiped her tears with the back of her hand.
The sight made Marcel let out a weak laugh, though his face remained pale. He had been unconscious for a long time, but he hadn’t been completely unaware. Sometimes he could hear the voices around him, yet no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t force himself to wake up.
Even when he heard Anika say she would marry him, his body still wouldn’t respond.
Marcel needed to know it hadn’t been a dream. He motioned for her to sit closer and fumbled for her hand.
“Anika…” he began. “I could hear people while I was in a coma. I heard you say that if I woke up, you’d marry me. Is that true?”
Anika was stunned all over again. She had never imagined that the brain of someone in a coma could be so aware.
Even though she didn’t want to take back what she had said, she couldn’t admit it so easily—not after everything that had happened between them.
She hesitated for a long time, trying to untangle the mess of emotions in her chest. Embarrassed by her tears, she turned her face away and wiped them quickly.
“I was just very emotional when I said that,” she murmured. “I wasn’t seriously saying I’d marry you.”
Marcel had known Anika long enough to recognize when she wasn’t telling the truth. Her words didn’t anger him at all.
“I’m so glad, Anika,” he said softly. “Don’t worry about anything. As soon as I’m allowed to leave, I’ll start planning the grandest wedding this city has ever seen. I’ll make you the happiest woman in the world. Tell me what your dream wedding looks like.”

To Marcel, this was the best news he could have heard after waking up.
Before Anika could interrupt, he began describing the wedding in vivid detail.
Anika felt overwhelmed. She truly did intend to marry him—but she needed time. More than anything, she wanted time to fall in love with him.
“You…” She stopped, then tried again. “You should focus on recovering first. We can talk about this again when you’ve rested. And you understand that I need some time, don’t you? But don’t worry. I promise I won’t go back on my word.”
She spoke hesitantly, pausing often. To hide her nervousness, she busied herself tucking the blanket more snugly around him.
Marcel nodded faintly. He understood how she felt. It was enough that she had agreed. He could wait until she was ready—because in the end, they would be husband and wife.
Katie heard voices coming from Marcel’s room as she walked down the hall. When she pushed the door open and saw Anika and Marcel together, she burst into tears of relief. In her shock, she nearly dropped the soup she was carrying.
“Marcel?” she gasped. “Are you really awake? You came back to us?”
She rushed to the bed as if she couldn’t trust her own eyes. In that moment of happiness, she even forgot her dislike of Anika.
