But before he could continue, a man’s voice sounded from the doorway. A handsome man in a floral shirt stepped into the ward, beaming from ear to ear. He carried an enormous bouquet of red roses. Behind him, someone else followed with a large fruit basket. The man looked like a complete playboy.
Rory’s expression instinctively tightened, his lips pressing together the moment he saw him.
Margo stared at the newcomer, stunned. “Mr. Ruiz, what are you doing here?”
The man walked up to the bed, his tone full of exaggerated concern. “I heard you got hurt on set and had to be hospitalized. I was worried, so I came to see you right away. Here—I brought you flowers and fruit. Get well soon, Margo. It breaks my heart to see you like this.”
His over-the-top affection made Rory, standing off to the side, scowl.
The man reached for Margo’s hand, but she quickly pulled it back, clearly uncomfortable.
Instead of getting angry, he smiled and pulled a jewelry box from his pocket. “You must be bored in the hospital. Look, I brought you a gift. It’s a custom diamond necklace. How do you like it?”
Margo felt uneasy as she stared at the necklace. She remembered the time her agent had arranged for her to attend a wine party to network. That was where she had met Joziah Ruiz. He had shown an unusually strong interest in her, and it had made her uncomfortable ever since.
She had always stayed vigilant. She even made it clear to her agent that she wanted nothing to do with Joziah. Yet even after she refused him—politely, directly—he continued to pester her. And now he had shown up at the hospital. She never expected that.
She was caught in a dilemma.
“Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Ruiz, but…” Margo trailed off mid-sentence. Hesitation threaded through her voice as she searched for the right words to refuse him. Unsure what to do, she lifted her eyes and met Rory’s gaze, silently asking for support.
Rory frowned, his dislike for Joziah obvious. He knew the man, and he had even held a grudge against him ever since he saw Joziah make a move on an actress at that wine party.
He just hadn’t expected Joziah to set his sights on Margo.
Seeing her look at him, Rory stepped forward and gripped Joziah’s left shoulder firmly. His voice dropped, low and menacing. “Margo is resting. This is a hospital ward, not a place for you to mess around with women. Leave before you embarrass yourself. Trust me, no one here wants to see that.”
Joziah’s eyes filled with impatience. He clicked his tongue, irritated. Why was Rory always around, like a fly buzzing near his ear? What Joziah did—and who he spoke to—was none of Rory’s business.
Joziah turned to Rory and looked him up and down with disdain. “Rory, I’m curious. Why do you follow me everywhere like some pest? I’m here to visit Margo. What does that have to do with you? Are you her parent? Her boyfriend? No? Then get out of the way.”
Margo frowned, about to speak. But before she could, Rory turned and addressed the nurse. “Edna, please escort Mr. Ruiz out. Not just anyone can enter this ward. And I don’t appreciate his language. Ask him to wash his mouth before he leaves.”
