Carolyn froze. Her mouth snapped shut, her eyes widening in stunned silence. The truth hung heavily in the ruined room. Adelina wasn’t born a monster — she had been forged into a lethal weapon by the very family that was supposed to be her sanctuary.
Ten minutes later, the leather seats of my McLaren were freezing against my tense muscles. The dark trees of the Greenwich estate blurred past the windshield.
Kira clung to my right arm, her tears soaking the sleeve of my jacket. She was playing the fragile victim, desperately trying to solidify our alliance.

I stared at the dark road ahead. I looked down at the silver burn on her skin, but I didn’t feel the protective, blinding rage an Alpha should feel for his mate. I only saw the consequences of her own malicious stupidity.
“I promise,” I said.
The words were entirely hollow. Kira let out a shaky breath and rested her head against my shoulder, completely unaware of the massive chasm that had just opened between us.
My hands gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white. My Inner Wolf wasn’t mourning Kira’s pain. It was pacing relentlessly in my skull, letting out a low, unfamiliar whine of profound remorse. I couldn’t stop seeing Adelina standing in that doorway. I couldn’t stop thinking about her cold, murderous eyes and the raw, terrifying, primal power she had radiated.
I had thrown her away because I thought she was weak. But tonight, I realized I had abandoned a queen — and the agonizing sting of that mistake was beginning to tear my soul apart.

The sterile white room of the Davenport Pack’s private clinic reeked of antiseptic and the sickening, sweet stench of Kira’s burnt flesh.
I stood by the door, my Inner Wolf still trembling from the suffocating, freezing aura Adelina had unleashed at the estate. The Pack Doctor carefully applied a neutralizing salve to the blistering silver burn on Kira’s thigh. She hissed, tears streaming down her pale face.

Disgust, thick and metallic, coated the back of my throat. She had absolutely no idea what she was dealing with.
I snatched the phone from her hand.
