The heavy, iron-reinforced oak doors of the Sterling townhouse didn’t just close — they slammed shut with the finality of a coffin lid.
I stumbled backward, my expensive heels catching on the uneven, freezing concrete of the Upper East Side sidewalk. Two human security guards in immaculate black suits stood at the threshold, their faces entirely devoid of pity.
