But for now, the board was set. The confidence surging through me was intoxicating. I needed to see her. I needed to look into Adelina’s eyes and know that she was entirely oblivious to the noose tightening around her neck.
I checked my watch. Adelina visited her dying grandmother, Elder Maeve, at the Silvermoon Sanctum every afternoon. It was the perfect place to deliver my wedding invitation.

The scent of antiseptic and soothing herbs clung to my clothes as I left my grandmother’s room. Elder Maeve was fading, and my heart ached with a heavy, hollow grief. But as I approached the brass-buttoned elevator at the end of the white marble corridor, that sorrow was instantly forced aside, replaced by a cold, hard focus.
The elevator doors slid open. Kira Parrish was leaning against the dark mahogany paneling inside. Her sickly-sweet scent — overripe peaches masking a rotten core — flooded the small space, thick with gloating anticipation.

I didn’t take the envelope. I just looked at her, keeping my expression perfectly blank. As a wolfless woman, I had no Inner Wolf to bare its fangs, but I had learned long ago that silence was a weapon of its own.
