Suddenly, a blinding white spotlight pierced the darkness of the car.

The drive back to Manhattan was a blur of blinding tears and suffocating humiliation. By the time I locked myself inside my penthouse study, the heavy oak door sealing me in a tomb of my own making, my world had completely collapsed.
The room reeked of spilled amber bourbon and the sour, rotting stench of my own despair. An overturned leather armchair lay on the expensive rug — a casualty of my earlier, impotent rage. I slumped onto the sofa, staring blankly at the massive flat-screen on the wall.

The footage showed the chaotic interior of the Parrish estate. Bryan Parrish looked like a cornered, desperate beast. He stood in front of a hidden wall safe, shoving heavy gold bars and a forged human passport into his son Brent’s chest.
