The motorcade of twelve black, armored Rolls-Royce Phantoms glided down the Long Island Expressway like a massive steel serpent cutting through the crisp autumn traffic. Our lead car, adorned with a delicate wreath of white roses and lilies on the grille, carried me toward the Blackstone Estate.
I sat in the luxurious rear cabin, wrapped in the blissful, intoxicating safety of Kain’s ancient cedar scent, completely unaware of the deadly web closing in around us.
I didn’t know it then, but miles away, in the cold, silver-reinforced confines of the Continental Pack Council’s Detention Center, Kira Parrish’s vengeful madness had reached its peak. As our motorcade turned off the highway, approaching the estate, Silas was already waiting. In the dense, damp woods flanking the private road, the Rogue lay prone in the dirt, his scent reeking of greed and cold-blooded murder. Beside him rested an iPad, its screen glowing with a digital map tracking the red GPS dot of our car. His thumb hovered over the bright red button of a heavy plastic detonator.
Our car turned onto the private, two-lane asphalt road. Massive, century-old oak trees lined the path, their thick canopies swallowing the afternoon sunlight and plunging the cabin into deep, shifting shadows.
