The reporter had clearly come prepared. She wanted the biggest scoop and the best soundbite. The salon fell instantly silent. The laughter died out, and the women who had come with Candace lowered their eyes in embarrassment.
Normally, they would have taught the reporter a lesson for belittling their livelihood. But Candace was a public figure now, so they kept their mouths shut.
Amy gently tugged Candace’s sleeve. Candace gave her friends a small nod, signaling that she had it under control. Then she cleared her throat and looked at the reporter calmly.
“The rumors are true. I used to sing at a bar with a few friends, and I don’t see any problem with that. All jobs are equal, aren’t they? Why should I feel differently about it just because I’m getting married?” She paused briefly, her tone steady. “I know a lot of people think I don’t deserve Ron, but we really love each other. I’ve already decided to be a virtuous wife. He’ll teach me about financial investment, so he won’t have to worry about me.”
Then, as if remembering the question, she added with a shy smile, “And about the wedding… it’s really up to him. You know he’s a busy man. I don’t want him distracted by trivial things. Honestly, I’ll be fine as long as Ron likes me.”
Candace’s response was smooth and polished. Without mentioning Annabel by name, she still managed to reference her indirectly—everyone knew Rupert and Annabel’s engagement had been canceled because of Candace.
