Nikolas didn’t think much about it. Since a police officer was here, he figured Ashton wouldn’t dare to break his promise. With a triumphant grin, he handed over the last bottle of medicine he had.
Ashton took the bottle without saying a word and looked at it carefully, inspecting the bottle and checking the contents.
When Nikolas saw this, he became impatient. He was worried Ashton would no longer compensate him, so he hurriedly urged, “I’ve given you the medicine. Where’s my money? Hurry! Give it to me so I can buy new medicines.”
It was only then that Ashton looked at him and said with a look of disbelief, “Sir, this medicine is so expensive. Why doesn’t it even have a label? Can you tell me what kind of medicine this is?”
Ashton posed the question suddenly, catching Nikolas completely off guard. His heart raced in his chest, thudding like a drum.
Nikolas had seen Ashton driving a gleaming luxury car and assumed he was wealthy. Seizing the opportunity, he had schemed to extort some easy money. But now, with Ashton asking the name of the medicine that could be worth over one hundred thousand, what could he say? His web of deceit was fraying at the edges, and the truth teetered on the verge of exposure.
As Nikolas stood there, silent and sweating, the crowd around them began to sense something was amiss. The longer he hesitated, the more their suspicion grew, like dark clouds gathering before a storm.
Even Alisha, a naive young woman, began to frown as well. When she saw Nikolas’ silence stretch on, doubt flickered across her innocent features.
Beads of sweat dripped down Nikolas’ forehead, which he hastily wiped away. He forced a nervous laugh and pretended to be clueless. “I’m not well-educated,” he stammered. “I don’t know the name of the medicine. The doctor prescribed it and said it was some new drug. I just paid what he asked.”
Ashton let out a chuckle, the sound sharp as a knife through the growing tension. “You don’t even know the name of the medicine, yet you’re willing to throw over one hundred thousand dollars at it?”

Nikolas felt the weight of panic pressing down on him, threatening to crush his ruse.
But he refused to back down, and his tone grew more defiant. “Yeah, I bought it! The doctor prescribed it, so I paid what he asked. I don’t have time for your questions. Just give me the money; I need to buy more!”
Ashton shook his head with an almost paternal patience. “I didn’t come by my money easily. If you expect me to hand over such a large amount, I think it’s only fair to know what I’m paying for, right? Otherwise, I’d be the one getting swindled, wouldn’t I?”
Nikolas shifted uneasily, but Ashton continued, his tone thoughtful, “Since you’re unsure about the medicine’s name, I have a simple suggestion. There’s a hospital nearby. Why don’t we go together and consult a professional doctor? If it turns out the medicine is truly worth what you claim, I’ll pay you every cent of that amount—without hesitation.”
Nikolas felt his composure slip, his confidence unraveling like a loose thread. The suggestion was a direct path to his lies being laid bare.
