The dance began. Jules led Lucy onto the floor, his long fingers lightly holding her hand as they eased into the steps.

Kingsley was smoking outside. Peter had looked for him after finishing his social rounds and finally found him thanks to Ethan.
Peter walked closer, looking at Kingsley standing alone in the night, surrounded by smoke. He teased, “What’s wrong? Feeling bad? If it hurts that much, go get her back p>
Kingsley looked up at him, his voice cold. “What gave you that idea p>
“Then what are you doing standing out here?” Peter asked, unconvinced.
“Just needed a smoke p>
Kingsley took a deep drag. The smoke blurred his features, but the image of the two people intimate on the dance floor kept replaying in his mind, refusing to dissipate.
Peter wouldn’t let him off the hook. “Are you sure? I was going to take you inside to dance—the partners are about to switch for the second song. You could have danced with your ex-wife p>
“Are you that bored?” Kingsley

Peter persisted, smiling as he leaned in. “I just want to dance with you. To see if our chemistry from all those years ago is still there p>
Kingsley crushed the cigarette into the ashtray and turned to walk straight back into the banquet hall.
Just as he stepped through the doors, the first dance ended.
Lucy let go of Jules’s hand, her tone aloof. “Find your own partner for the next one p>
“Did I dance poorly?” Jules raised an eyebrow, feigning confusion.
“You’re too loud. Can’t you feel it yourself?” Lucy retorted calmly.
Jules chuckled low, deliberately teasing her. “Lucy, I am your boss. Can you show me some respect p>
“Respect is earned. Have you earned it?” Lucy looked up at him, yielding nothing.
As they bantered, Peter, dressed in
his sharp suit, walked over slowly
