“Are you serious? I was just worried about you! If something terrible happened to you, the Sterling family would be completely screwed,” Ethan complained, sounding incredibly wronged. “And now look, I’m the bad guy here.”
Kingsley shot him an icy glare. “If you ever dare say another word about her, I’ll cut out your tongue.”
Ethan immediately flashed an apologetic smile. “Got it! Understood! So we can move past this now, right?”
“No,” Kingsley said decisively. “You can leave now.”
Ethan froze in place and quickly softened his stance. “Come on, man, what do you want from me? All I did was make a few comments about her.”
Kingsley raised his gaze, the chill in his eyes enough to inflict frostbite. “A few comments? Thanks to your comments, I took this beating for nothing.”
“She ignored you because she couldn’t stand you to begin with! That has nothing to do with me!” Ethan wanted to scream at him—She literally doesn’t care about you! You could kill yourself right in front of her, and she probably wouldn’t even blink! But catching sight of Kingsley’s livid expression, he forced the words back down his throat.
He enjoyed being alive too much to test his luck.
Kingsley hadn’t absorbed a single word. He just gritted out, “Get out.”
“Fine, fine, I’m leaving!” Ethan stood up to go but couldn’t resist throwing in one last piece of unsolicited advice. “Look, I’m going to shoot straight with you. If you’re trying to win Lucy’s sympathy by playing the victim, you’d better try a different strategy. This one is a dead end! I’m not trying to sabotage you here. I might scam people out of their money, but I don’t mess with their lives.”
Shane hurried back into the room, his tone urgent. “Mr. Sherwood, the doctor said you still need to stay for further observation.”
“Discharge me as soon as the IV is done. I’m not going to die.” Kingsley leaned against the headboard, sounding completely unbothered.
Ethan nodded vigorously from the sidelines. “If he wants out, just let him out. He’s got me looking out for him anyway. Besides, you
can barely
see his external injuries now.”
“Mr. Sherwood, you have a concussion. If it isn’t properly monitored, there could be lasting side effects,” Shane urged, still worried.
“Come on, your boss is young and in peak physical condition. Why would he be scared of a little bump on the head?” Ethan smoothed things over before pivoting to a joke. “My phone is on twenty-four-seven. If anything actually goes wrong, just call me As long as the consulting fee is high enough, I’ll be here in a flash, even if it’s three in the morning.”
Without waiting for Kingsley’s temper to flare, Ethan bolted out of the room as if his life depended on it.
That afternoon, Kingsley discharged himself from the hospital and returned to Sherwood Manor.
The moment elder Mrs. Sherwood saw him, she frowned and chided, “You treat hospital stays like child’s play. Are you taking this seriously?”
“I recovered, so I left. No need to waste hospital beds.” Kingsley sat on the sofa, his tone light.
The older woman scoffed, speaking out of frustration. “Next time, you should just write your will first. It’d save everyone a lot of trouble.”
Kingsley’s lips twitched upward as he casually played along. “Not a bad idea.”
He picked up the freshly brewed tea a maid had set out, took small sip,
then pulled out his phone. He
opened the video he had saved last night and placed it on the coffee table.
