Lucy exited the conference room and stood side-by-side with Emma waiting for the elevator. “Book me a flight for tomorrow night,” she said decisively.
Before Emma could reply, Kingsley and Shane approached. The four of them waited together.
Emma tapped rapidly on her phone, then looked up. “Lucy, there are no tickets for tomorrow night. The earliest is the morning after tomorrow p>
“Book that one then.” As Lucy spoke, the elevator doors slid open. She stepped in first.
Kingsley, one hand in his pocket, followed her in.
Lucy reached out to press the floor button, but her hand was blocked by Kingsley’s body. She turned her head slightly and spoke gently to Shane, who had just entered. “Shane, could you press the first floor? Thanks p>
“Of course,” Shane replied, pressing both the basement and first-floor buttons.
The elevator was silent enough to hear breathing. Suddenly, Kingsley’s phone buzzed.
He played a voice message. A female voice rang out clearly: [Kingsley, today is my birthday p>
[Happy Birthday.] Kingsley typed back, then looked up at Shane. “Have a birthday gift sent over to Joyce p>
“Yes, Mr. Sherwood,” Shane responded immediately.
Lucy heard every word. She sneered and scoffed silently in her heart. She raised a hand to tuck her hair, but felt a sharp tug—a strand had caught on her earring.
She instinctively removed the earring, but it slipped from her fingers, hitting the floor and rolling right to Kingsley’s foot.
Kingsley looked down at the earring, then glanced at Lucy. He bent down and picked it up.
He held it out to her. When she didn’t take it, he raised a brow and asked, “Don’t want it anymore p>
Lucy didn’t speak. She reached out to take it. Her fingertips brushed against his for a fleeting second before she quickly pulled back.
Just then, the elevator chimed, and the doors opened.
Without a glance at Kingsley, Lucy walked out with Emma.
Kingsley watched her retreating figure until the doors slid shut. He stood in silence for a moment before speaking abruptly. “Has she changed a lot p>
Shane took two seconds to react before nodding hastily. “Miss Lynwood… indeed, she has changed a lot p>
Kingsley looked up, his cold eyes sweeping over Shane, but he said nothing more. The elevator returned to silence.
Outside Sterling Tower, the car Emma called hadn’t arrived yet.
Lucy’s phone buzzed in her pocket. Seeing Jules’s name, she answered, hearing his gentle voice. “How is it? Is work going smoothly p>
“It’s going well so far. If nothing goes wrong, I’l be done tomorrow and fly back the morning after.” The thought of seeing her precious Seven Softened her features, and a smile
touched her lips.
On the other end, Jules, wearing a bathrobe, sounded lazy. “Good. I’ll bring Seven
to pick you up at the airport p>
“Okay, sounds good.” Lucy laughed.
Nearby, a black Rolls-Royce Ghost drove slowly past. From the passenger seat, Shane saw Lucy waiting by the road but wisely kept his mouth shut.
In the back seat, Kingsley looked out the window and caught the smile on Lucy’s face was the look he used to see often. Even when s mother made things difficult for her, she used to smile just like that to brush it off. sŵnovels
