The next day, as soon as Lucy arrived at the office, she spotted Evie Sherwood in the reception area.
Emma, her assistant, immediately lowered her voice to brief her. “Lucy, those are the representatives from our British partners.”
Lucy gave a slight nod and walked straight to her desk.
Evie clearly froze when she saw her, but then the realization hit-the project’s lead designer, was none other than the woman standing right in front of her.
A look of genuine appreciation touched Evie’s refined features. She offered Lucy a polite nod in greeting.
But Lucy completely ignored her.
Evie’s formerly unhinged, nearly obsessive behavior was still burned into Lucy’s memory. Since they rarely crossed paths anyway, Lucy didn’t care enough to engage. She simply sat down, booted up her computer, and focused on reviewing the design drafts.
Once the meeting began, Lucy stood at the front of the room by the presentation screen. Keeping her gaze locked on the designs, she delivered her pitch with confident ease.
Everyone in the room listened intently. Several questions were raised during the session, and Lucy addressed each one with flawless logic and total composure.
During the mid-meeting break, a female colleague next to Evie lowered her voice, sounding thoroughly impressed. “Lucy’s designs are absolutely stunning. You can hardly find a single flaw. Not like certain people who used connections to get here, submitting messy work that no one is allowed to criticize.”
Evie nodded in absolute agreement. “She nailed our director’s core requirements flawlessly.”
Meanwhile, Lucy stepped out of the conference room and handed Emma the necklace Kingsley had dropped off the night before. “Have someone return this for me.”
Emma glanced at the luxury jewelry bag and promptly agreed. “Will do!”
Lucy turned and headed to the breakroom to make some coffee. Just as she tore open a sugar packet, a soft voice called out from behind her. “Mrs. Sherwood.”
She looked up to see Evie getting some water. “Just call me Lucy,” she corrected flatly, stripping away the outdated familial label.
Evie nodded, genuine admiration in her eyes. “I really didn’t expect your designs to be so incredible. You’re amazing at what you do.”
Lucy didn’t leave immediately. Tracing the rim of her coffee mug, she asked
casually, “How long have you been working in the industry?”
“A little over a year.” Evie lowered her gaze, a touch of self-deprecation in her tone.
“I was completely out of my mind the last couple of years. I never bothered to
actually learn anything, just wasted all that time for nothing.”
“Well, it’s good that you finally woke up. I hope you stay that way,” Lucy said. She picked up her coffee and walked straight out of the breakroom.
Evie paused for a second before stepping out after her.
Half an hour later.
At the Sherwood Group headquarters.
Xavier knocked on the office door.
“Come in.”
He pushed the door open and held out a delicate jewelry bag. “Mr. Sherwood, Ms. Lynwood had someone return this.”
Kingsley glanced up at the bag, his expression completely unreadable. “Have someone send it back to her,” he ordered coolly.
“Understood.” Xavier nodded. Just
as he turned to leave, Kingsley’s voice stopped him. “Pick out another

Silence fell over the office once more.
