Chapter 278
Jules lifted his head, his bleary, drunken eyes darting between the two of them. “He definitely is,” he slurred out. “Almost made me eat pavement. Guy’s totally lost it!”
As soon as he spoke, Jules’s driver noticed the commotion. He hurried over and grabbed Jules by his other arm.
They managed to load him into the car.
Kingsley completely ignored them. He seized Lucy’s wrist. “I’m taking you home.”
“Let go!” Lucy lifted her purse and slammed it onto the back of his hand. His pale skin instantly turned bright red, but his grip didn’t waver.
Driven by sheer fury, she swung her bag with all her might, cracking it hard against his cheek. The force snapped Kingsley’s head to the side. His ears rang loudly, yet he still refused to release her hand.
“You’re going to make me go deaf,” he rasped.
“You deserve it!” Lucy raised her arm for another swing, but his other large hand shot out, capturing her wrist in an iron grip.
“If you won’t let me drive you, at least let my driver take you. Is that so hard?” Kingsley stared at her, his tone dripping with an undeniable authority.
“Are you really going to ride back with a hammered Jules?”
Lucy’s eyes were filled with biting sarcasm. “Who I go home with is none of your business.”
The alcohol was finally starting to hit her. A heavy wave of dizziness washed over her, and she instinctively raised a hand to massage her temples.
Kingsley softened his tone, though his resolve remained unshaken.
“I won’t go with you. Let the driver take you. Seven is at home waiting. If you want to stand out here and argue all night, that’s fine by me.”
“Let go,” Lucy demanded, glaring daggers at him. Eventually, she dropped her bag and relented.
Kingsley released her wrist. She spotted Xavier standing by a car a short distance away and marched straight toward him.
“Have you been drinking?” she asked Xavier.
Xavier looked at Kingsley, then back at Lucy, and gave an honest nod. “I have. I drank a little at the dinner tonight.”
He quickly pulled open the rear door. “Miss Lynwood, please let the driver take you. We’ll have someone bring your car back.”
Lucy raised an eyebrow. “I assume the driver hasn’t been drinking?”
“Don’t worry, Miss Lynwood. I’m completely sober,” Phil replied from the driver’s seat.
Xavier looked at Kingsley, who ordered in a low voice, “Phil, take her car and drive her home.”
“Right away, Mr. Sherwood,” Phil acknowledged. He pushed the door open, climbed out, and followed Lucy toward her vehicle.
Kingsley reached up to rub his stinging cheek and ear. The skin wasn’t broken, but the burning throb radiating from the blow was brutally uncomfortable
His phone vibrated with a new message: [Mr. Sherwood, Irma is investigating the
acquisition of the Lynwood Minority Shares. Should we intervene?]
His fingers flew across the screen
as he replied: [Let her. Just make sure she doesnt trace it back to the Source or to her. The bomb needs to drop at the perfect moment.]
Message sent, he pulled open the door and slid into the backseat. His brows were
knit tight, his expression turning dark and solemn.
Xavier slid into the passenger seat a moment later and passed his phone back. “Mr.
Sherwood, Miss Lynwood donated the necklace to an orphanage.”
Kingsley skimmed the message. His lips parted slightly, and when he finally spoke, his tone betrayed a raw, undeniable hurt. “She really means it. She doesn’t want the slightest connection to me content
