Chapter 18
Jane watched Lucy fall asleep before quietly backing out of the bedroom.
With phone in hand, she walked into the study, her mind already working on how to find a reliable hospital beyond the Sherwoods’ influence.
She didn’t have those connections personally, but her uncle, Raymond, did.
She messaged Raymond immediately. Before long, a reply came: [Okay. Send me your friend’s details p>
Meanwhile, in the UK.
After breakfast, Kingsley went straight to the hospital.
He walked into the ward and gave some instructions to the caregiver, When he was ready to leave, a weak, raspy voice called out from behind him. “Kingsley… Kingsley p>
Kingsley turned to see Joyce.
She was awake and looking at him.
The man before her had lost all the boyish softness of their youth, replaced by a steady, handsome presence that left her momentarily dazed.
Kingsley paused. “You’re awake p>
Joyce struggled to force out the words: “It’s so good… to see you p>
The caregiver hurriedly adjusted the bed height and brought a sippy cup to her lips. “Miss Joyce, have some water p>
As Joyce latched onto the straw, her gaze swept over the ring on Kingsley’s fourth finger. The glint of silver dimmed the light in her eyes.
Kingsley looked at her and spoke plainly. “The doctors say if you stick with your rehab, you’ll gradually get better p>
After moistening her throat, Joyce’s voice was slightly clearer. She looked at him and whispered, “You’ll stay with me, right?” The sound was so faint it was barely audible.
Kingsley replied, “I’ll visit when I have
time.” He checked his watch and instructed. “Ten
he caregiver if you
need anything. Have some rest now.
I have matters to attend to
Joyce nodded silently. As Kingsley turned and left, the last flicker of light faded from Joyce’s face, her expression sinking.
The moment Kingsley was gone, the
meekness in Joyce’s eyes vanished, replaced by a dark chill. She
clenched her fists, swearing internally: *Kingsley can only be mine I will get him back, no matter what it takes p>
She turned to the caregiver, tension hidden in her voice. “Kingsley… he’s married, isn’t he p>
The caregiver paused, recalling the obvious ring on Kingsley’s hand, and nodded hesitantly. “Looking at the ring on Mr. Sherwood’s hand, he appears to be married p>
Joyce’s skeletal fingers clawed at the bedsheet, her knuckles white.
She sneered internally. “Married? So what? The fact that Kingsley guarded me for all these years proves I still have a place in his heart p>
Outside, Kingsley had just gotten into his car when Shane called.
He swiped to answer, and Shane’s report came through. “Boss, Mrs. Sherwood went for a checkup this afternoon. She and the baby are both healthy. However… she booked an abortion for tomorrow afternoon. The hospital has already cancelled it p>
Shane exhaled silently after finishing. Kingsley’s voice was cold. “Keep a close
watch on Jane. She will definitely contact other hospitals p>
“Yes!” Shane responded quickly.
Kingsley gave a few more heavy instructions before hanging up.
With restless tapping of his fingers against his knee and a brow deeply furrowed, his
eyes became a swirl of unreadable emotions.
