Chapter 247

Lucy caught a glimpse of the friend request but didn’t even entertain the thought of clicking on it. Was he really that stupid, or did he take her for a brainless fool?

That night, the two kids, exhausted from playing all day, fell fast asleep the second their heads hit the pillows.

Jane had ordered a bottle of red wine, and the two women poured themselves small glasses.

Lucy pinched the stem of her glass, gently swirling the dark liquid inside. She raised her glass and clinked it against Jane’s.

“Tomorrow morning, I’m taking Seven to the cemetery to visit my mom p>

Jane nodded. “I’ll go with you p>

Lucy took a sip of wine, her tone laced with lighthearted teasing. “No need, you should head back. Otherwise, Thurston will think I’ve kidnapped his wife and start keeping his guard up around me p>

“He wouldn’t dare,” Jane said, her lips curving into a confident smile.

“True, everyone knows Thurston worships the ground his wife walks on,” Lucy laughed, a warm gleam in her eyes.

The two of them chatted casually over their wine until the night grew late and they finally decided to turn in.

Back in the hospital ward, Kingsley tossed and turned in bed. He had unlocked his phone no less than a hundred times, but the screen remained devoid of any new notifications.

He glanced at Thurston, who was sleeping soundly on the sofa, and irritation flared in his chest. Was this guy here to keep him company, or just to catch up on sleep?

Hearing the rustling, Shane immediately stood up. “Mr. Sherwood, are you feeling unwell p>

“No,” Kingsley replied coldly. He paused before adding, “Check your phone. Did she send a message p>

Shane muttered softly, “Mr. Sherwood, I don’t have Miss Lynwood’s contact p>

“Oh,” Kingsley replied. He absentmindedly rubbed the edge of his phone and muttered to himself, “Didn’t she say she was paying my medical bills? I told her I didn’t have the money, but I still don’t see any payment p>

Shane’s chest tightened, and he quickly explained, “Mr. Sherwood, your hospital account isn’t in arrears p>

“It isn’t?” Kingsley sat up abruptly, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Then make sure the balance shows as unpaid. Give the hospital her number and tell them to call the payment p>

her for

“I’ll go do that right now.” Shane nodded and was about to leave when Kingsley stopped him.

“It’s three in the morning. A few hours won’t make a difference.” Kingsley glanced at him, his tone softening slightly.

Shane sat back down, still worried. “Mr. Sherwood, are you sure you’re okay? If you’re uncomfortable, I can go get a doctor p>

“I’m fine.” Kingsley leaned back against the headboard and suddenly asked, “Or maybe you can ask the doctor to prescribe me some sleeping pills p>

His gaze drifted toward Thurston. “Or, you could wake him up to keep me company p>

Shane glanced at the soundly

sleeping man on the sofa and “Mr. Sherwood

“Just go to sleep!” Kingsley glared at him in annoyance.

As soon as the words left his mouth, Thurston frowned on the sofa. Without even opening his eyes, he grumbled sleepily, “Keep your voices down. You’re waking me

up p>

“Aren’t you here to keep me company? I’m not even asleep yet, and you’re already knocked out p>

Kingsley stared blankly at the ceiling,

completely wide awake. Frustration

gnawed at him. He had taken that

beating for nothing; she was completely different to his

suffering.

“You’re the one choosing not to sleep. What does that have to do with me?” Thurston muttered as he sat up, rubbing his lower back.

The sofa was too short for his tall frame, and sleeping curled up half the night had left him sore and aching.

He looked at Kingsley in the hospital bed and suggested, “Why don’t we switch? Since you’re not sleeping anyway, go sit on the sofa p>

Kingsley froze for a second, then turned to glare at him. “Have you no shame p>

“You woke me up first,” Thurston said, ignoring him as he squeezed onto the side of the hospital bed. “I don’t mind roughing it and sharing the bed with you p>

The moment he laid down and reached his arm out, Kingsley stood up with a dark expression and marched straight over to the sofa.
