Elissa didn’t want to make a scene and complicate things for herself, so she softened her tone, pretending to be earnest yet helpless. “It’s true that Rowan and I get along a little better than we used to, but you know what he’s like. Just as Elissa finished, Rowan strode into Murphy Manor and was about to enter the dining room when he caught her words–delivered with such sincerity it stopped him in his tracks.

Elissa lowered her lashes and nodded meekly. “All right. I’ll find a chance

With her goal achieved, Matriarch Murphy, for once, let her off the hook.
After dinner, Elissa stood to leave. She was almost out of the old house
when Lorraine called her back.
Elissa turned. “Are you going to ask me to talk to Rowan, too p>
“I just want to know why you agreed to the old lady’s request p>
Lorraine had come today at her parents‘ urging, just to pay her respects to the matriarch. She had no idea she’d be dragged into this drama.
What she couldn’t understand was why Elissa would agree to it.
“I’m not going to say anything to Rowan,” Elissa replied quietly. “Back there, I only agreed to keep up appearances. Don’t take it seriously p>
If she’d refused outright, she’d probably have been forced to kneel and beg–she had no intention of putting her knees through that.
Besides, she’d already painted things in such a way that the matriarch wouldn’t be holding out much hope. In a few days, she’d just mention that
Rowan didn’t listen to her.
That would be the end of it.
