On the day of Old Mr. Wilkinson’s birthday celebration, Elissa rose early to give Suzanne Jensen her acupuncture treatment.
The party was scheduled for the evening, so when she sat down for breakfast, she was the only guest at the table with the Wilkinsons.
Worried she might feel awkward, Suzanne had Elissa sit beside her, making it easy to serve her food.
Watching them interact with the easy affection of a mother and daughter, Maya clenched her fists under the table, her nails digging into her palms until they left angry red marks.
It was just like when Vera was born. Suzanne’s attention had shifted away from her then, too.
