Her former home.
Ever since he walked away from Elissa’s front door that day, he had temporarily moved back into Greenwood Manor.
This place, in its own small way, still held the lingering traces of Elissa’s presence, bringing him a fleeting sense of peace.
Or rather, it gave him the illusion that she wasn’t completely out of his reach.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed on the counter.
He picked it up and saw a text from an unknown number: [Mr. Atwater, care to meet? I might just have a way to help you and the love of your life fly off into the sunset together.]
The instant the message went through, the phone was violently snatched from Maya Wilkinson’s hand.
Marcia Carson glared at the sent message, grinding her teeth. “What is this supposed to mean? What did you promise me when you told me to take Vera’s place?!”
Maya had explicitly sworn that she would ensure Marcia successfully married Frank Atwater!
What was this now? Burning the bridge after crossing the river?!
Maya didn’t look threatened in the slightest. She yanked her phone back with a cold sneer. “Keep your voice down, Marcia. Or better yet, scream louder so the maids, my mother, and Jesse hear you.”
Marcia was instantly silenced, looking like a chicken being choked by the neck. Even as fury and humiliation boiled in her chest, she was forced to swallow it down!
Just because she wasn’t born into extreme wealth like these arrogant elites, she was destined to be treated like dirt on their shoes!
However, based on the digging she had done over the past few days, Maya wasn’t even a biological Wilkinson either.
She was barely a step above a fraud like Marcia.
Taking comfort in that thought, Marcia suppressed her rage. “You’re the one who broke your promise first. You know exactly how I feel about Frank…”
What kind of genuine romance could a woman possibly have with her former brother-in-law?
Maya scoffed internally, though she didn’t bother exposing the hypocrisy. She couldn’t afford a total fallout with Marcia right now. If Elissa came back, Maya would be the one to suffer.
Masking her true intentions, Maya forced a smile. “Did you really think I’d let the two of them live happily ever after?”
Seeing the confusion on Marcia’s
face, Maya patted her shoulder and narrowed her eyes viciously “Don’t worry, Frank Atwater, Rowan Murphy-neither of them wil ever end up with Elissa.”
She was never, ever going to let the real Vera return to the Wilkinson family!
Blissfully unaware of the schemes swirling around her, Elissa finished her tea, chatted with Mrs. Garrett for a bit, and headed upstairs to get some sleep.
Usually, sleeping in a new place caused her insomnia, but here, she found herself yawning long before her usual bedtime.
Just as her hand closed over her doorknob, she heard the unmistakable click of the door opening across the hall.
She instinctively turned her head, her gaze colliding straight into the man’s dark, gleaming eyes.
Elissa jumped slightly. “Wh-what are you still doing here?”
Shouldn’t he have left for his apartment by now?
Rowan raised an eyebrow, entirely unapologetic. “This is my house. If I’m not here, where else would I be?”
The logic was so sound it completely shut Elissa down.

He had clearly just showered. He was wearing a navy blue cotton pajama set that was the exact matching counterpart to the light pink set she was currently wearing.
Elissa recognized the couples’ set immediately.
There were dozens of autumn pajamas in the walk-in closet.
But she always preferred pure cotton when she slept.
So, when she grabbed a set at random before her shower, this was the one she had chosen.
Even though the temperature in the house was perfectly regulated, her cheeks began to burn all over again She cleared her throat and asked, “…How did you know I was going to wear this set?”
Couples’ clothes-
And pajamas, no less.
For Elissa, it was an incredibly novel… and undeniably intimate experience.
