Rivercross Residence?
That was Rowan’s house. Why was Rex calling her from there?
Elissa didn’t answer directly. “What’s going on? I’m at Zephyr Manor right now. I just finished Suzanne’s physical therapy.”
Rex nodded through the phone. “Yeah, I know.”
Thank God she was already done treating his mother. If his family found out he had pulled her away from his own mom’s treatment just to do Rowan a solid, they would have chewed him out.
Calling the doctor away right in the middle of his mother’s session-what a devoted son he was!
Rex continued, “It’s Mrs. Garrett. She accidentally sprained her ankle walking down the stairs. It’s swollen, and she refuses to let me take her to the hospital. We’ve already put an ice pack on it, though.”
Hearing this, Elissa immediately agreed to go.
An ankle sprain for an older woman could be serious. She needed to check on it herself to be at ease.
Even without her connection to Rowan, Mrs. Garrett had always been wonderful to her, and she was deeply grateful for that.
Hanging up the phone, Rex looked at the old woman sitting on the sofa and rubbed his temples. “Are you really not going to the hospital?”
“No,” she replied flatly.
Janice Garrett scoffed. “Weren’t you two trying to get me to fake an illness? Well, problem solved. I don’t have to fake it anymore.”
Rex rubbed his nose and walked over with a sheepish smile. “I swear, we never actually wanted you to get hurt!”
He was taking the fall for this in a major way.
Who knew it would be such a coincidence? He had a day off from the hospital today
and thought he’d come over to butter up the old lady.
If she was in a good mood and played along, Rowan’s apartment at Vistapeak Gardens would be left empty for him.
But as soon as he arrived, wow-he didn’t even need to butter her up.
The moment she heard him come in, she hurried down the stairs and genuinely rolled her ankle.
Thank God she didn’t take a full tumble!
When Elissa arrived, this was the scene she walked into.
Janice Garrett was reclining on the sofa while Rex waited on her hand and foot, pouring tea and fetching water.
Yes, he was being completely subservient.
Elissa’s eyebrow twitched at the sight.
Back at the Wilkinson house, Rex had never been this attentive and filial to anyone.
Rex let out a massive sigh of relief when he saw Elissa. Mrs. Garrett’s face instantly softened into a kind smile tinged with concern. “How concern. How did you get here so fast? It’s just a little sprain, nothing serious. You shouldn’t have rushed. Safety first.”
“Traffic is light at this hour, so it was a quick drive.”
She was so familiar with Mrs. Garrett that, even with the new dynamic of her relationship with Rowan, she felt completely at ease after a night to process it.
She approached with a smile, tossed her purse onto the sofa, and immediately bent down to examine Mrs. Garrett’s ankle.
Rex stepped aside to give her room. “Could it be fractured or something?”
Mrs. Garrett was older, and her bones weren’t as strong as a young person’s. A simple sprain could easily lead to a fracture.
That was exactly why he had been so frantic to get her to the hospital, and why Elissa had rushed over so quickly.
Elissa nodded. “Let me take a look.”
She removed the ice pack and carefully examined the joint. Her shoulders relaxed. “It’s not fractured, but it’s a nasty sprain. She needs to rest it completely. Try not to put any weight on this foot for the next two weeks.”
Rex hadn’t exaggerated on the phone at all; it was severely swollen.
Because of the swelling, physical therapy wasn’t an option right now. She reapplied the ice pack and gave the maid a list of medications te pick up from the pharmacy
“That’s a relief,” Rex said.
He gave a small nod, then, thinking Elissa wasn’t looking, furiously winked and gestured at Mrs. Garrett.
Elissa just happened to turn her head to grab a tissue and caught him red-handed. “Rex, is there something wrong with your eye? Do you need me to take a look?”
She was actually pretty decent at ophthalmology.
