As soon as Marcia Carson slid into the car, she realized her back was drenched in cold sweat.
She wasn’t afraid of that old bat.
But deep down, she was terrified of the Murphy family–the family that represented power and wealth in Vistapeak City.
She had to get her hands on whatever Elissa Drummond possessed, no matter what.
Even as she drove down the winding road from the estate, Marcia had to pull over, hands still trembling, to send a text.

Marcia ruffled Hickey Atwater’s hair and muttered, “The Murphys p>
“What did they say to you p>
Carmela shot her a sharp glare. “You look like you’ve been through hell. Tell me you didn’t do something stupid to get on the Murphys‘ bad side p>
If they’d really crossed the Murphys, the Atwater family would be in serious trouble.
“Who did you piss off p>
Just thinking about it made Marcia’s blood boil. “That old woman from the Murphys–she threw something at my face the moment I walked in p>
The woman was completely unhinged.
How Elissa survived under her thumb all these years was beyond comprehension.
Seeing that there was no real feud, Carmela’s tone cooled as she leaned back, arms crossed. “You think the Murphys are so easy to cozy up to? I’ve warned you before–don’t go looking for trouble and end up worse off p>
Marcia gave a cold little laugh. “Mom, you say that as if getting close to the Murphys wouldn’t benefit the Atwaters, too p>
She had a point, and Carmela knew it.
Carmela just sighed, her voice tight. “Of course, it’d be great for us if you succeeded. But remember–if this blows up in your face, don’t expect the Atwaters to shield you p>
If she failed, Marcia’s fate would be grim indeed.
Lately, Elissa had been pouring all her energy into research, often working late into the night. As a result, she’d been seeing fewer patients at the clinic.
So when she did show up for consultations, even though she arrived early and started calling names right away, the number of patients seeking extra slots had multiplied several times over.

She had no choice but to prioritize her regulars for walk–in appointments. Just as she was about to finish with her last patient, a knock sounded at her office door.
Elissa looked up to see Lorraine Lynn standing in the doorway and couldn’t help but smile. “What brings you here p>
“I’m here to ask for a little favor, that’s what p>
Lorraine strode in on her heels and dropped her purse onto a chair. “Can you squeeze me in? The nurse at the desk said it’s impossible to get a slot today p>
And she really couldn’t get an appointment.
The prescription Elissa had given her last time worked wonders. Not only was Lorraine sleeping better, but she actually felt more energetic and balanced.
She’d been hoping to come back for another couple rounds of treatment and really get her health on
track.
But getting a slot was impossible!
She’d set alarms, sat by her phone at the exact release time, but the appointments vanished in seconds. Sometimes she didn’t even have time to click before they were all gone.
Who could understand this pain?
She’d never tried online flash sales, but now she finally understood that crushing disappointment.
Out of options, she’d come to ask Elissa for a little backdoor help.

Elissa’s lips curled into a smile. “Didn’t you say friends are supposed to do each other favors p>

Lorraine grinned, reaching out her hand like she was coaxing a little sister. “Take my pulse, quick! Lunch is on me, and you’re not allowed to refuse–I need a chance to pay you back. There’s this place right down the street from your clinic, it’s amazing p>
Elissa reached over to check her pulse, cutting Lorraine off. “Looks like my prescription really did the
trick p>
“What do you mean?” Lorraine asked, genuinely curious. “Did my pulse improve p>
Elissa shook her head. “No, I just noticed you’re way chattier than usual p>
But more talkative was good.
Actually, it was kind of cute.
Lorraine paused, cleared her throat, and managed to regain her usual poise. “I’m only talkative with friends, you know. ”
Elissa just raised an eyebrow and said nothing more, focusing on the examination.
