She had already troubled Elissa enough.
Besides, having an elderly family member tag along would just make the lunch awkward and restrictive.
Elissa didn’t push it. They walked out of the clinic together and parted ways.
Following Jesse to his car, Elissa finally smiled and asked, “Why the sudden treat?”
Jesse paused for a moment before replying, “A new person showed up at our house out of nowhere. I’m sorry for dragging you into that mess.”
The moment he mentioned it, Elissa understood.
He was talking about the absolute circus surrounding Marcia Carson.
She had agreed early on to visit and treat Suzanne Jensen, only to have someone constantly targeting her suddenly move into their home.
Just as Elissa opened her mouth to speak, Jesse added, “Of course, that’s not the only reason I’m buying you lunch.”
His mother’s legs were finally showing improvement; it was only right that he express his gratitude.
Plus, he genuinely enjoyed Elissa’s company.
Honestly, aside from Maya Wilkinson, everyone in the Wilkinson family felt entirely at ease with her.
Elissa couldn’t help but laugh. “Then what is the reason?”
“You treat me like family,” Jesse smiled. “Me buying you a meal is perfectly justified.”
The underlying message was clear: this meal wasn’t a pity apology on behalf of Marcia.
It was simply about their friendship.
It had nothing to do with anyone else.
It was his way of reassuring her that despite the hostile new addition to his
household, their dynamic wouldn’t change. They were still friends.
Elissa understood. This meal was his way of giving her peace of mind.
She nodded thoughtfully, then looked up at Jesse, who was a full head taller than her. Her eyes

The two headed to the restaurant Jesse had reserved in advance. After finishing their meal, they stepped out of the private dining room only to bump straight into people exiting the room diagonally across from theirs.

Beaming, one of the men handed a contract to his assistant and eagerly fawned, Mr. Murphy, here’s to a fantastico partnership! Rest assured, this is our company’s top priority for the next two years. Rowan gave a curt nod. Before he could respond, he caught sight of the girl stepping out of the room across the hall from the corner of his eye.
And the man right behind her.
He signaled lan to see the business partners out before striding purposefully toward Elissa.
When Elissa walked out, she had been too busy pulling her coat on to look up. It wasn’t until a tall shadow blocked her path that she adjusted her collar and raised her head.
Knowing Rowan was a notorious jealous monster, Jesse tactfully stayed silent and headed straight for the parking lot, giving the two of them space.
Surprised to see Rowan, Elissa’s face instantly broke into a bright smile. “What are you doing here?”
Seeing her bright expression, the suffocating knot in Rowan’s chest loosened. He scoffed lightly. “Is this place reserved exclusively for you two?”
He sounded so incredibly sour.
No matter how oblivious Elissa could be, the stench of his jealousy was impossible to miss. Staring up at his perfectly styled hair, an impulsive thought suddenly crossed her mind.
Reaching up, she rested her hand right on top of his head, her voice melting into a soft coaxing tone. “I was just grabbing a quick bite with Jesse.”

The business partners, who hadn’t made it very far, happened to glance back. Their jaws practically hit the floor.

Did she just pet the terrifying Mr. Murphy like a giant golden retriever??
