It seemed someone was quite happy playing the role of a loyal golden retriever.
Rowan paused. His gaze met her clear eyes, and the corners of his lips curved up faintly. Mindful of her pregnancy, he instinctively lowered his head to accommodate her touch, though his mouth offered a haughty reply. “Who asked you that?”
Hearing this, Elissa ruffled his hair vigorously, not caring that she was messing up his pristine styling. She shot him a playful glare. “Then pretend I didn’t explain.”
With that, she pulled her hand back and headed toward the stairs.
Indulgent amusement filled Rowan’s eyes as he caught her wrist from behind. “Are you going to treat Mrs. Wilkinson’s leg this afternoon?”
“Yeah.”
Elissa wasn’t actually mad. She let him intertwine their fingers and answered honestly, “I’m going over with Jesse.”
“Alright.”
Rowan seemed to think of something and agreed readily. He walked her to the car, greeted Jesse Wilkinson, and then turned to leave.
When they arrived at Zephyr Manor, Elissa noticed the house had returned to its usual quiet state.
Jesse explained, “Our family is hosting a charity auction soon. My mom sent them out to get custom dresses fitted.”
Elissa immediately knew who he meant, and her shoulders relaxed.
Whenever Marcia Carson was around, Elissa felt like she had a target on her back.
If she wasn’t pregnant, she wouldn’t have cared, but carrying a child, she wasn’t about to take any risks.
Suzanne Jensen must have deliberately arranged for them to leave today out of consideration for her.
A warm feeling spread through Elissa’s chest. She smiled and picked up the conversation. “A charity auction?”
“Yeah.”
Jesse nodded. “After Vera went missing all those years ago, my parents set up a charity foundation. They hoped that doing good deeds might convince God to watch over her.”
“All the proceeds from this auction will go to the foundation for charity.”
Hearing this, it rang a bell for Elissa.
