Chapter 623
Her voice trembled, and she curled into a tight ball. Her agonizing distress didn’t look faked in the slightest.
Seeing that Specs still looked slightly suspicious, Elissa went on the offensive. “Did —did you poison my water?”
Cold sweat had already beaded on her nose from the pain.
Specs immediately denied it. “No way! Do you think I’m crazy?!”
But if something actually happened to this pregnant woman right now, he was entirely screwed.
Elissa looked at him with sheer distrust, her brow furrowing deeply in waves of simulated agony. “Then help me! Finn hasn’t given any orders. If I die, you’re taking the fall.”
Specs was completely out of his depth. He didn’t dare touch her. “How am I supposed to help you? It’s not like I can call an ambulance. Finn would never allow it.”
Elissa shook her head weakly. “I can treat it myself, but I need an acupuncture pin.”
Specs looked like his head was about to explode. “In this dump? Where the hell am I supposed to find a silver pin right now?”
This abandoned villa complex was situated in the most desolate, remote outskirts of Vistapeak City. Since it was essentially a ghost town, there were no hospitals or even pharmacies for miles. A round trip would take at least half an hour, and it didn’t look like Elissa would last that long.
Elissa stayed quiet for a long moment before gasping out, “Rowan should have one in his car. Go downstairs and ask him for it.”
Specs hesitated, eyeing her critically. He was still highly suspicious.
Elissa groaned, pressing hard against her stomach as if fighting off another brutal wave of pain. “If you think I’m trying to distract you, just send one of your guys! Hurry up!”
Hearing that, Specs dropped his suspicion. He glanced at the guard in the hallway and sneered, “What are you standing around for? Go ask Mr. Murphy for a pin. Tell him if he doesn’t cough one up, he’s not going to be a father after all.”
Elissa acted as though the pain was so blinding she didn’t have the energy to care about his toxic remarks.
Realizing his taunts were useless, Specs was about to lose his temper when Elissa weakly kicked at the shattered glass on the floor. “Aren’t you going to clean that up? Aren’t you worried I’ll use it to kill myself?”
What a nightmare of a woman.
She really was acting like a spoiled princess, bossing him around. Specs looked incredibly annoyed, but he knew she had a point. Glaring at her, he crouched down to gather the larger shards of glass.
The remaining pieces were tiny splinters, difficult to sweep up by hand. He was just about to stand and kick them away when a sudden, sharp pai pierced his head A spite second later, he blacked out entirely and hit the floor.
Elissa didn’t wait to see if he was completely unconscious. She sprang up and bolted for the
staircase. Just as she reached the landing she saw one of Finn’s men,
rushing up. The moment the man
saw Specs out cold, he charged straight for her.
Operating on pure adrenaline, Elissa spun around and dove into the nearest
bedroom. She slammed the door shut and engaged the deadbolt as fast as humanly possible.
No matter how hard the man slammed against the wood, she kept her entire body weight pressed against the door.
It wasn’t until the pounding stopped
that she finally let out a shaky
breath. But remembering the situation downstairs, she couldn’t completely relax. Every single one of Finns men was armed with live ammunition. If her stunt pushed Finn over the edge, he might just decide to burn everything to the ground.
But if she hadn’t made a move, Rowan would have been entirely trapped.
Downstairs, the heavy thud from the second floor made everyone’s heart skip a beat. Elissa was up there. Rowan and his group were terrified she was hurt, while Finn was terrified his only piece of leverage was compromised.
Rowan shot to his feet. He was just about to head for the stairs when one of Finn’s men sprinted down and whispered urgently into Finn’s ear.
Instantly, the color drained from Finn’s face.
Laurel tapped her slender fingers against the coffee table and leaned forward slightly. “Mr. Thornton, is it time to bring this little farce to an end?”
Finn didn’t answer right away. He looked furious, finally grinding out through clenched teeth, “I had no idea Dr. Drummond was such a skilled fighter.”
Except for Laurel and Rowan, both Rex and Frank were stunned. Little Elissa didn’t have any combat training.
