Laurel didn’t even look at her. She stared down Maya with a crushing, silent pressure. “She didn’t get it, but you did, didn’t you?”
“Laurel…” Maya forced a smile, genuinely terrified of her. “I have no idea what you’re talking about either.”
Laurel’s expression didn’t change. She nodded thoughtfully. “Then both of you will stay in your rooms for the next two days. You are not to leave.”
Maids immediately stepped forward to escort them upstairs. It was house arrest.
Maya wasn’t about to comply. Being locked up would ruin the rest of her plans. “On what grounds? I’m calling my dad! I’ll call the police!”
“Go ahead,” Laurel smiled faintly. “Let’s see if the police investigate you or me first.”
Maya’s hand trembled. If Rowan and Laurel were already on to them, the police finding the evidence was only a matter of time.
“Fine! I’ll go to my room!” Maya stomped her foot and marched upstairs. As long as Frank didn’t screw up, things would still go her way.
Seeing Maya submit, Marcia didn’t dare argue. She shot Laurel a nervous look and scurried upstairs.
Laurel turned to the maids. “Don’t let them out. Cut the internet and phone signals to their rooms.”
“Yes, Miss.”
The living room fell silent. Rex looked at his sister. “Why not just force the antidote out of them now?”
Just tie them up. He could have the antidote before sunset.
A dark emotion flickered in Laurel’s eyes. “When has she ever left a way out when she does things?”
“She” meant Maya. Rex paused,
recognizing the grief in Laurel’s tone. She was talking about when Maya. had caused their sister to go
missing years ago. It was true.
Maya’s cruelty knew no bounds; she always aimed to destroy.
A faint smile returned to Laurel’s lips. “But she did give us a huge piece of information today.”
“What information?” Rex asked, admitting he wasn’t as strategic as his sister.
Laurel looked at him like he was an idiot. “Didn’t I tell you to watch them and see who they were targeting?”
“Yeah.” Suddenly, through his sleep-deprived haze, a realization
struck Rex. He sat up straight, bis eyes widening. “You mean they poisoned Jacqueline because they were targeting Elissa?”
Laurel didn’t answer, but her approving nod screamed, “Not entirely stupid, are you?”
Rex leaped to his feet. “So Elissa is one of the people closest to Jacqueline?!”
Laurel nodded again. The answer was glaringly obvious now.
Wide awake, Rex pulled out his phone. “I’m going to check the age and name of Jacqueline’s daughter-in-law.”
Laurel rubbed her temples. “…What did you just say?”
Rex was already barking orders into the phone, ignoring her. He seemed smart until you actually looked closely.
Just then, Laurel’s phone rang. Glancing at the screen, her usual iron composure cracked, revealing raw nerves. She sat up straight, cleared her throat, and answered softly, “Elissa, what’s wrong?”
