Jesse’s tone turned icy. “Gone?”

Laurel answered him, but her piercing gaze never once left Tristan’s face.
Half an hour ago, Maya had been released on bail due to supposed health issues.
Usually, the process for securing bail was incredibly tedious and time-consuming, but Maya’s release had been fast-tracked at an unnatural speed.
Since she was officially out on bail, and considering Tristan’s blatant backing, the police hadn’t dared to assign a heavy detail to shadow her every move.
If they completely alienated Tristan now, and he eventually took control of the family empire after Old Mr. Wilkinson passed, their careers would be absolutely ruined.
But they never expected that giving her an inch of breathing room would result in Maya vanishing completely from the hospital without a trace.
It wasn’t just Laurel and Jesse; both Old Mr. Wilkinson and Old Mrs. Wilkinson turned their furious gazes toward Tristan.
Suzanne’s reaction was even worse—she didn’t even look surprised.
This was far from the first time Tristan had moved mountains to protect Maya.
Old Mr. Wilkinson had heard whispers of his past interventions, but since the issues hadn’t been catastrophic, he had turned a blind eye.
But this time, it involved attempted murder.
Seeing Tristan stammer in stunned silence, Old Mr. Wilkinson’s recently calmed expression shattered into pure rage. He slammed his hand against the table. “Tristan! Give me the truth right now. Do you have anything to do with this?”
If Tristan was truly this far gone, completely unable to distinguish right from wrong, he would rather not have a son at all.
Otherwise, the Wilkinson family’s pristine reputation and legacy would be completely decimated by this fool.
Tristan seemed totally shell-shocked. He flinched at Old Mr. Wilkinson’s roar, and it took him a solid minute to look at Laurel and process the information. “What do you mean, gone?”
“Isn’t that what I should be asking you?”
Laurel shot back.
It was abundantly clear she was fully convinced Tristan was the one who helped Maya escape.
Staring down the combined wrath of his entire family, Tristan felt incredibly defensive, panic lacing his tone. “How the hell should I know!”
“Just give me a straight answer.”
Old Mr. Wilkinson’s terrifyingly sharp gaze zeroed in on him. “Did you, or did you not, orchestrate this?”
Tristan opened his mouth to defend himself.
He fell silent for a moment before Suzanne’s devastatingly deadened gaze finally broke him. He spoke, sounding utterly crushed with regret. She told me she was excruciating pain pulled some strings toget her out on bail so she could be taken to the hospital for a check-up. But as for how she escaped… I swear I have no idea!”
He genuinely had no idea Maya was capable of pulling off a stunt like this.
Suzanne let out a bitter, mocking laugh. “You really didn’t know whether she was actually sick or not?”
For over twenty years, even after losing Vera, not a single person in the Wilkinson household had ever mistreated Maya.
From the time she was a little girl, a mere headache was enough to have a private physician rushed to the manor.
She had never missed a single comprehensive medical exam in her entire life.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with her health.
Tristan had considered that. “I just
thought… she’s always been so
timid, and she’s lived such a
sheltered life. It was completely
natural for her to be terrified after being dragged into a police station…”
“And now?”
Laurel interrupted fiercely. “Do you still think she’s timid?”
Someone who had the audacity to execute a high-stakes escape right under the
noses of the police was anything but timid.
Old Mr. Wilkinson was practically
vibrating with rage. He grabbed an ashtray, fully prepared to hurl it at Tristan’s head, but forced himself to slam Dback down. He shot to his feet, pointing a trembling finger at his son. “How did I ever raise such an incredibly stupid child?! She tried to murder your own flesh and blood, and you’re out here feeling sorry for her?!”
