“That isn’t how you set two people up. Being rejected to your face is incredibly humiliating. If anyone else had been around, they would have been a laughingstock p>
“I know that. I asked him privately, so nobody else will ever find out,” Mira defended. “Besides, Harvey isn’t just some random guy. He’s an old friend. I know his personality inside and out, and he isn’t the type to gossip. I wasn’t embarrassed at all p>
Mira was stubborn, convinced the older woman was making a mountain out of a molehill.
“Of course you aren’t embarrassed. Sera is the one who would be humiliated.” “Sera doesn’t even know I asked him, so how could she be humiliated p>
“What? You didn’t even check with Sera first before going straight to Harvey?” Evelyn’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“I figured if Harvey was interested, I’d bring it up with Sera. If he wasn’t, I’d just drop it. Is there a problem with that p>
There was absolutely a problem with that. Evelyn sank back onto the couch, exasperated.
“Let me ask you this. Who are you closer to? Harvey, or Sera p>
“You can’t really compare them. Harvey and I go way back, but Sera is family, and she genuinely cares about me. My relationships with them are completely different p>
“Fine, I won’t get into that with you,” Evelyn sighed. “My point is that romance requires a delicate touch. You can’t just lay it all out on the table like a business transaction p>
It made sense, really. With a mother who stirred up drama instead of teaching her daughter anything useful, it was perfectly normal for Mira to be oblivious about these social nuances. Evelyn felt a sudden obligation to impart some wisdom.
“Mira, it’s sweet that you want to set them up and feel things out for Sera. But you have to ask her first. If she’s on board, then you approach Harvey. After all, he’s the outsider here. We need to be the ones steering the sitration, not him. And even you do ask him, you have to be subtle. You can’t just ask him outright and give him a reason to look down on us p>
Mira found the whole thing ridiculously complicated. There

“You find an excuse. Invite him for a coffee, or ask him for a small favor. If he agrees; there’s a good chance he’s interested, and you can take it a step further. If he turns you down, then there’s no hope. Asking directly would just end in rejection, so save yourself the embarrassment Take this matchmaking attempt, for example. You could have found an excuse to invite both Sera and Harvey out to hang out. Then, you make up a reason to leave early so they’re stuck alone together. If one of them bails shortly after, there’s no spark. If they stay, there’s potential. From there, your job as the matchmaker is done, and you let things progress naturally p>
