Liora nodded in agreement.

Then, Mira continued toward the main stage.
Ethan hadn’t heard what they said, but he shot her friends a warning glance before following her.
Just then, Mira heard another familiar voice.
“How could you push Mara down the stairs? She’s your sister. You’ve been getting more and more out of line since she came back. You’d better apologize properly later p>
It was Wesley Scott, her childhood fiancé; their families had arranged their marriage long ago.

Mira tried to ignore him, but he kept talking as he followed her.
Ethan frowned at her. “What’s gotten into you? Apologize to Wesley right now p>
Mira pretended she didn’t hear him.
In her past life, Wesley had always defended Mara and criticized Mira for every little
thing, just like her brothers—they were all cut from the same cloth.
Looking back, she couldn’t believe she’d been so blind as to fall for such a scumbag.
Later, when Mira’s reputation was in shambles, the Scott family insisted on breaking off the engagement and arranging a new one with Mara.

Thinking back now, she realized her so-called parents and brothers had already severed all familial ties with her.
Her marriage to Wesley was just a family alliance; it made no difference to the Mercers which daughter the Scotts chose, so it was no surprise they didn’t care.
This time around, Mira chose to draw a line with Wesley early on.
Family, lovers, friends-if they could be stolen away by someone else, they weren’t worth having in the first place.
Meanwhile, the homecoming party was in full swing.
When Mr. Mercer and Mrs. Mercer appeared in the center of the hall with their angelic-looking daughter, the room erupted in thunderous applause
The atmosphere was warm and festive.
Guests raised their glasses to offer their blessings.
Mara was breathtaking in a magnificent and elegant white evening gown.
The hem trailed on the floor, and an embroidered sash accentuated her impossibly slender waist, making her look as delicate as a flower.
Adrian and Lacey stood on either side, affectionately linking arms with their daughter.
Her brothers were nearby, poised and charming as they mingled with the guests.
Mara was addressing the crowd in a clear, sweet voice:

Just then, Ethan slowly led Mira into the hall, and all eyes immediately shifted to her.
Her hair was a mess, her expression was haggard, her clothes were wrinkled, and there seemed to be the faint mark of a handprint on her cheek.
She looked like a beggar-no, like a criminal.
