“It’s said this decoy was a devoted follower of Mishka, completely under her control and obeying her every command,” Hank Whitlock told the group.
“If that’s the case, then killing her wasn’t a waste,” York Vance said through gritted
teeth.
He snatched the remote from Mishka’s hand, while Mira Mercer sprinkled a packet of Necrotic Catalyst over each of the three corpses.
Then, the group quickly moved forward in the direction the trio had come from. “Wait,” York said. “Should we go back and check where we just were p>
“No need,” Master Ellis replied. “If he said it’s sealed, then it’s sealed. Going back is useless. We need to hurry and get out of here; there are explosives everywhere p>
“But what about the people upstairs in the hospital? All those hostages, and some of our own men p>
“We still have to get out of here first before we can figure out a way to move them,” Hank said.
“What if there’s an active time bomb in here? Do you want us all to die down here p>
Besides, there was no cell signal, making it impossible to communicate with the outside world.
Beyond the spacious underground living room lay a narrow, rectangular corridor with rough concrete walls.
Though unfinished, it seemed sturdy enough, barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side.
It took the group of dozens a full minute just to file into the passage.
Twenty minutes later, they hit a dead end.
“What’s wrong? Is there no way out?” Master Ellis asked.
“No way out? Does the tunnel just end here?” a vanguard soldier asked.
“Impossible.” Master Ellis walked up to inspect the wall closely.
If it was really a dead end, why would they have dug it in the first place? Just for fun?
Half a minute later, he found a tiny black speck. He took out a small knife, chipped away the surrounding concrete, and revealed a button.
“Master Ellis, don’t press it yet. Keep looking,” Mira warned.
Pressing the wrong trigger on these mechanisms could have severe consequences.
If there were hidden traps, it could be fatal.
He searched carefully again and, sure enough, found another tiny black speck on the opposite side.
