She couldn’t agree to that; he was just trying to trap her.
Mira thought to herself.
“Then don’t pretend you’re doing this for my own good.” He turned his head away, sulking in a rare display of childishness.
“Fine, I’m not doing it for you. Do whatever you want.” Mira refused to indulge his tantrum.
Owen crossed his arms. Shouldn’t she have softened up and instantly agreed to marry him?
Why was she completely ignoring the script?
In the end, Owen tagged along that night, but only after Mira watched him down his medication like a hawk.
Not wanting to waste energy trekking, they hired the same driver. Upon arrival, they had him stash the car in a hidden spot and wait.
They navigated easily to the hidden exit the same underground tunnel that led from the hospital.
Mira’s intuition told her there was more to this passage than met the eye.
She refused to believe that someone would go through the trouble of digging a secret tunnel and installing high-grade security vaults just for a straight walk- through.
They were heading back to Mavaria soon. If she didn’t investigate it tonight, she would never forgive herself.
This was also the core reason she had insisted on executing Mishka’s father.
If he had a hidden fortune stashed here, and he managed to escape or get rescued, he would rebuild his empire in no time.
And Mavarian forces couldn’t keep an eye on this place forever; it was foreign territory.
Master Ellis stepped up, pulling away the brush they had used to conceal the entrance. Mira shone her flashlight inside. No fresh footprints. She breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
They left the Iron Wolves to guard the entrance, just in case.
The group ventured inward, quickly reaching the first mechanical vault door.
Having opened it before, they easily located the external trigger points. They simply reversed the sequence they had used to open it from the inside.
The heavy gears grinded to life, and Mira knew they were in.
The vault wasn’t overly complex, lacking any booby traps. The owners probably assumed no one outside knew about the tunnel.
And even if they did, the mechanical engineering was so specialized that very few could crack it.
The group entered the spacious, living-room-like area where they had rested previously, and began a meticulous search.
The food in the fridge, and the pots and plates, were exactly as they had left them.
Before they left last time, Mira had
arranged the furniture back to itset original state but she had sub tampered with a few hidden spots.
If anyone had been here, she would know immediately.
They scoured the underground “apartment” multiple times, yet found absolutely nothing.
“Search again. Don’t leave a single corner unchecked,” Master Ellis commanded.
The seven of them swapped search
zones and combed through the
room twice more with their
flashlights. Sure enough, behind the
leather sofa they spotted six tiny black dots.
The guards carefully pried away the paneling with their knives, revealing six hidden buttons.
Mira swept the room one last time to ensure they hadn’t missed anything else before returning to the buttons.
When they had dismantled the cartel’s operations earlier, they hadn’t found any of their liquid assets.
Logically, a drug lord of that magnitude wouldn’t store all his wealth in a bank.
When they had first passed through this massive underground space after escaping
the hospital, Mira had been highly suspicious.
But they had been pressed for time and couldn’t afford to linger.
So, she and the rest of the team decided to gamble on a midnight raid.
Venturing out tonight was a life-threatening risk, and no one knew for sure if they would actually find anything.
That was why they hadn’t dared to bring anyone else along.
The recent battles had resulted in casualties, but those were sanctioned operations
to save their compatriots, so no one complained.
This, however, was an entirely private endeavor.
If they unearthed a treasure, great. But what if they came up empty-handed?
Wasting everyone’s time was one thing, but what if someone got killed because of Mira’s hunch?
She dreaded the thought of
returning to Mavaria only to face the fury by a debt of blood she could never repay
