The tension from the earlier attack seemed to melt away completely. Since it was getting late, the three didn’t linger and soon reached Dorian’s home.
Helena was shown to a guest room by the garden. After freshening up, she shut the door and immediately called Alden.
Earlier, she had only managed to tell him that she’d been attacked and that Dorian had saved her—just enough to keep him from freaking out. Now, just as she was about to explain further, a noisy dispute erupted right outside her door.
“I told you, I’m staying with Helena! Let go—I’m not stepping into your room!” That was Valeria’s voice.
Then Dorian’s deep voice cut through. “Helena’s chatting with Alden! Instead of interrupting them, why don’t you keep your own guy company p>
“You—mmph—” A muffled, suggestive noise drifted away down the hall.
Inside, Helena couldn’t help but grin.
“What are you giggling about?” Alden asked, noticing her sudden silence and catching her soft giggles. A hint of frustration was in his tone.

“When I get back, we can be more lovey-dovey,” Alden’s words made Helena blush all over again.
She cleared her throat, feeling awkward, and quickly switched gears. “Anyway, why did you say earlier that Rylan wasn’t behind the attack?” They had been going over that very point before they got cut off.
Alden answered in a calm tone, “Given Rylan’s calculated nature, if he still had any remaining influence to leverage, he would never have personally stepped in to meddle in our project this time p>
Helena quickly caught the drift and gave a nod. “Exactly, you know him best. This attack looked straightforward, but it took serious muscle to pull off. With the tight security at our place, sneaking in a hitman isn’t a walk in the park. Rylan just doesn’t have the means right now p>
