What had he said to her?
Even though Alden had only meant to mislead Eleanino, the words he chose still cut deep—he had even mentioned divorce.
“Helena, I never should’ve kept the truth from you! I don’t want a divorce, not at all! I—” Alden was overcome with a storm of remorse and shame.

The words struck Alden like a bolt from the blue.
He whipped around, his heart hammering. Even with his eyes still foggy, he could make out the delicate outline of someone standing there.
It was Helena!
Alden felt as though he had stepped into a dream. His eyes darted between the very much alive Helena standing before him and the pale, lifeless form lying nearby. For once, a flicker of doubt crossed his usually clear, calculating gaze.
“Helena? You… you…” he stammered, his lips quivering as the words slipped out. His face was frozen in disbelief.
Helena looked back at him, her eyes brimming with tears.
Alden had always seemed unshakable—calm and in control. But now, his designer clothes were ripped and stained with blood and grime, thrashed by thorns.
He looked like a man who had lost everything. His shoulders sagged. All the fight had gone out of him. Because, in his heart, he had already buried her.
Helena’s throat tightened. How could she ever have questioned the depth of his love?
“It’s me! Alden, I’m okay!” Her voice rang out—quick and sure. She couldn’t stand seeing him like that for another second.
But Alden simply narrowed his eyes, trying to make out her words. He couldn’t hear her.
Helena stood still, her eyes instinctively focusing on the hearing aid near Alden’s ear. She shouted once more, “Alden.” But when he didn’t respond, it hit her—he couldn’t hear her, not even with the hearing aid. His ear injury had worsened.

Helena’s heart sank. She quickly moved toward him and wrapped her arms around him. Alden rocked back, caught off guard by her sudden embrace. After a brief pause, he looked down at the woman holding him so tightly. She… she was so warm. Her arms were snug around his waist. She was crying…

Alden’s heart leaped with joy, pushing away the dark cloud of despair that had hung over him. A wide, silent smile spread across his face. At last, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. “Helena, you’re okay. You’re really okay!” He kept repeating it, almost as if he couldn’t believe it.
When Helena had cried herself dry, she lifted her head off his chest and gazed up at him through eyes brimming with tears. Her eyes were gentle, lingering on him, and Alden couldn’t help but dip his head and kiss her deeply.
