Zayden’s smile cracked. The temperature in the room dipped. “And what are you proposing then p>
“I haven’t made up my mind yet. I just don’t want you pulling a fast one on me.” Helena leaned over the table, her face—painted up like a doll—edging closer to Zayden. A mischievous smile tugged at her lips as she added, “If you’re that eager for my signature, why not trade for it with that bit of land you’ve got in the western part of the city p>
“How do you know we own land in the western part of the city?” Zayden’s face shifted at once, suspicion flickering in his eyes.
Since engineering Delaney’s ruin, he had realized that staying put in the country was playing with fire. To stay ahead of the storm, he had started steering the Hughes family’s business toward Corland.
Back home, what little property the Hughes family had left was scattered and mostly unknown. Few were aware of that piece of land.
Was Helena playing dumb all along?
“Oh, come on. My mom owns Harrison Group. What don’t I know?” Helena’s mocking comeback wiped away the doubt clouding Zayden’s mind. Of course. This silly girl was Natalie’s child. The Harrison family had probably handed her the information on a silver platter.
Zayden leaned back in his seat, now looking more at ease. His voice took on a casual, almost lazy tone as he started bargaining. “That land’s no goldmine right now. You’d have to pour money into it and wait years before seeing a return. Here’s my offer—I’ll give you a big chunk of cash instead. Sounds good p>
“Not even a little!” Helena shot back, chin high and voice sharp. “Your dead nephew left me Star Wish Investments, and my mother’s got the Harrison Group under her thumb. I don’t need your money. I want the land because it amuses me. No land, no deal p>
With that, she slid the contract back across the table, her scarlet nails catching the light, her attitude loud and clear.
