Natalie had only just walked out the door when Helena dropped onto the couch, groaning with relief as she kicked off the heels that had been torturing her feet all day.
Liliana stayed put, asking the sales staff to bring over a selection of shoes. She needed a couple of new pairs, too.
Two assistants gave quick nods and disappeared into the back room. Once out of sight, they began murmuring quietly among themselves.
“That woman who just walked out—she’s got to be loaded,” one whispered. “Both those girls called her ‘Mom,’ but it didn’t feel like a tight-knit family. They don’t even resemble each other p>
“Isn’t it obvious?” the other replied, her tone bubbling with the thrill of someone who had devoured far too many dramatic books. “It’s straight out of a soap opera—maybe a case of mixed-up identities or some long-lost baby twist! The story could go in a hundred directions p>
The first assistant gave a quick nod. “Makes sense!” she said without hesitation.
That theory opened the floodgates. They immediately started arguing about who was the real daughter and who was just pretending.
“The first one,” one mused aloud, “walked in with the fancy lady, but they acted more like polite strangers. Definitely not like flesh and blood. Now the second girl? She couldn’t stop touching the woman—clung to her like a shadow, hanging on her arm and giggling. She has to be the real deal p>
“Right? And her dress is custom-made. It’s a total giveaway p>
“Absolutely! And then she asked for the priciest shoes on the spot. That confidence? She’s got money written all over her p>
The assistants kept chatting excitedly, spinning an entire drama in their heads.
When they came back from the stockroom with a few pairs of fresh heels, they stood next to Liliana, practically buzzing with excitement to help her try them on.
Helena, not one to dawdle, spoke up. “Could you help me choose a pair too? Nothing too high—something easy on the feet would be perfect.” But the two assistants ignored her completely. They were fixated on Liliana, lavishing her with praise.

Their voices blended together as they fawned over Liliana, treating her like she was some kind of queen.
Liliana sat on the couch, letting them dote on her, a sly smirk playing on her lips. From time to time, she glanced over at Helena, who stood off to the side, feeling like an invisible extra in a film she wasn’t even cast in.
But Helena had worked as a journalist for years and was a master at reading people. She saw right through the assistants’ flattery. Deciding it wasn’t worth the effort to get involved, she made up her mind to leave.
