Before she could say more, Alden let out a quiet laugh. “Don’t give Xavier a hard time. There’s a hidden link between Star Wish’s internal network and my email. Honestly, very little goes on there without me getting wind of it p>
Helena glanced at Xavier and mouthed a quick apology, then turned her attention back to the call. “If you already knew everything,” she asked, “why didn’t you just tell Xavier what to do p>
She had taken charge of the whole situation today with what looked like effortless ease. But the truth was, she was still new to the business world. Behind her composed expression, her nerves had been quietly fraying.
Alden didn’t miss a beat. “My way might not have been better. I finally got a break and figured it was the perfect time to let you handle the pressure.” He spoke like it was no big deal, but Helena could tell he wanted her to grow at her own pace.
Their conversation flowed easily, and before she realized it, time had slipped away. They soon pulled up to her apartment. Helena told Xavier to head home and get some rest, then continued chatting as she made her way upstairs.
Her place was in a luxury building with an elevator straight to the unit. As she stepped out of the elevator and reached for her door, a dark figure suddenly sprang at her from behind.
There was a security panel right by the entrance, directly connected to the building’s safety system.
Helena’s instincts kicked in, and she reached for the security panel—but a rough hand clamped over her mouth, yanked her back, and started dragging her away!
At that critical moment, Helena’s thoughts didn’t go to fear—they raced straight to Alden. The call was still active. She wasn’t thinking about yelling for help—what gnawed at her was the idea of Alden hearing the struggle and panicking.
Summoning every ounce of strength, she wrestled her arm free and quickly ended the call. Only then did her attacker catch on that she’d been on the phone. He lunged at her, reaching for the device.
In the chaos, Helena managed to wriggle out of his grip for a split second. Thinking on her feet, she flung her phone straight at the alarm button fixed to the wall.
The siren went off—beep, beep, beep—filling the hallway. The attacker swore under his breath and yanked her toward the stairs.
Down below, the building’s security team picked up the alarm right away. But before they could make it up, a familiar voice rang out, sharp and urgent. “Helena!” It was Valeria!

The attacker didn’t see it coming—he took a hard hit right in the eye from the purse’s metal strap. He howled in pain and clutched his face on reflex.
Without missing a beat, Helena bolted, while Valeria grabbed her arm and tried to drag her out of harm’s way.
“You bitches—I’ll kill you both today!” the man roared, his voice full of fury, as he hurled himself at them like a wild beast.
He barreled into them and seized their hair with both fists, jerking them backward with a force that made their heads snap.
