Slowly, the heat from before sparked again, turning into a fresh rush of happiness.
Their passion didn’t let up; it kept going strong from the daylight hours right into the darkness. When night fully settled in and the moon climbed high, Helena was utterly exhausted. She was so drained that she missed her evening meal and fell into a heavy sleep without a second thought.
Concerned that skipping food might upset her stomach, Alden took it upon himself to step out and pick up some gentle porridge. After coming back, he gently roused her.
Still half-asleep, she mumbled with a sulky face, “What do you want? You drained all my energy, and now you won’t even let me rest?” Her eyelids fluttered half-shut, her forehead creased, and her lips pushed out in protest—a far cry from the calm, efficient woman she usually was. Instead of losing patience, Alden thought she looked incredibly cute.
He sat down behind her and let her rest back against him. Holding the bowl close to her face, he urged softly, “Just have a bite or two. You’ll regret it in the morning otherwise p>
“Hmph,” Helena grumbled sleepily, sounding annoyed, but after a moment, she slowly opened her mouth, though clearly not thrilled about it.
He fed her carefully, just like you would with a sleepy child, giving her spoonfuls until the bowl was empty. Then, with a tender touch, he eased her back into bed.
But with all the back and forth, Helena didn’t feel quite so drowsy anymore. She watched him take care of everything—washing the bowl, pulling the covers around her with care—and couldn’t help but chuckle under her breath.
“You’re still up? What’s so funny?” Alden asked, his tone playful.
“I was just thinking about how Mr. Wilson here has turned into a full-on mother hen,” Helena’s eyes sparkled as she threw the jab, clearly enjoying herself.
“Nonsense!” Alden made a show of scowling and gave a playful, mock-command: “Sleep. Now p>
Out of the blue, Helena asked, “What if I keep acting spoiled like I did a few minutes ago? Would you get tired of me p>
Earlier, she’d felt drowsy, sure—but not so much that she couldn’t have eaten on her own.

After she behaved that way with Alden, a twinge of guilt crept into her chest.
Alden noticed right away. He felt lucky to be the one she finally let her guard down with. At the same time, his heart ached when he thought about all the years she’d spent being too grown-up for her own good.
