Helena couldn’t hold it together anymore. Her cries came out in gasps. Alden gently patted her back, slow and careful, like soothing a child.
“What in the world happened here?” Stacey exclaimed, her eyes sweeping across the room. The moment she took everything in, fury rose in her like a storm.
Snapping back to reality, Terry scrambled to his feet and rushed toward Stacey. “Stacey, Helena seduced me! I was drunk—I thought she was you. That’s the only reason it happened p>
That was all Stacey needed to hear. Her fury boiled over. “You shameless bitch! I invited you as my bridesmaid out of kindness, even though you used to be with Terry. And this is how you repay me? By trying to take my husband p>
Her heels pounded the floor as she marched over, raising her hand, ready to strike.
But before she could land the slap, Alden caught her wrist. His stare turned sharp, making her retreat with a tremble.
A chill ran through her as she stammered, “W-Who the hell are you?” With a voice as sharp as steel, Alden said, “I’m Helena’s husband.” A flicker of surprise crossed Stacey’s face before she spotted the cochlear implant behind his ear. Her lips curled into a cruel grin. “So it’s true. Helena really did get married. To a deaf man, no less. Pathetic. Now it makes sense why she didn’t dare bring you to my wedding. Must’ve been embarrassing p>
Those words cut deep, and Helena felt the sting.
Even though the insult didn’t bother her personally, she hated that Alden was being dragged into it.
Alden didn’t react. It was like he hadn’t even heard Stacey. He just held Helena closer, then lifted her into his arms without a word.
As Stacey opened her mouth to scream for security, she noticed her father, Gerald Simpson, hurrying after Alden with panic written all over his face.
With flushed cheeks and a nervous tremble in his voice, Gerald said, “Mr. Wilson, I had no idea you would be attending p>
Without acknowledging him, Alden continued walking with Helena cradled in his arms.
Confusion scrunched Stacey’s brows. “Dad, why are you talking to that deaf man p>

Even Stacey looked stunned. She remembered Gemma mentioning something about a potential marriage alliance with the Wilson family. Everyone had assumed Emily would be the one to marry into the Wilson family. How could it be Helena now?
Frustration twisted Stacey’s face as she bit her lip. “Big deal. Alden might not even be the one to inherit the Wilson Group. He’s disabled anyway p>
Gerald’s tone turned sharp. “Shut your mouth! You have no idea what you’re talking about p>
Whether Alden took over the Wilson Group or not didn’t matter. Bearing the Wilson name alone gave him the power to crush families like theirs without lifting more than a finger.
Tears welled in Stacey’s eyes. Never before had Gerald spoken to her with such biting authority.
With a heavy sigh, Gerald shook his head. “Not a single word about Mr. Wilson being here today. Forget this for now and get through your wedding. I’ll take you to apologize to his wife myself another day. Whatever it takes, we have to fix this p>
Inside the car, warmth greeted Helena the moment Alden set her down.
Without a word, he tossed his coat over her lap.
The door clicked shut before she could even thank him.
Had she imagined the softness in him earlier? Now, there was a chill in his silence that hadn’t been there before. Maybe he misunderstood what really happened with Terry?
When the door opened again, Helena’s eyes flicked toward Alden, with worry in them.
“I didn’t try to seduce Terry. We haven’t talked since the breakup. My mother asked me to go and hand over a gift to Stacey, that’s all,” Helena said, her voice steady but low.

Leaning in with a faint, unreadable smile, Alden replied, “If I believed you did something like that, I wouldn’t have walked out of there with you in my arms p>
Helena breathed a sigh of relief. But if he didn’t misunderstand things, what was that coldness for?
She didn’t have time to ask. A gentle touch slid across her calf, pulling her from her thoughts.
