The night settled over the villa, enveloping it in an unusually deep darkness. Helena turned on her phone’s flashlight, illuminating Alden’s cochlear implant. The blinking red light revealed its drained battery—his lifeline to sound had failed.
A sudden noise from the bathroom startled her. Fearing Alden might have fallen, she rushed toward the sound.
The door swung open, and Alden emerged, a towel wrapped around his waist.
Before she could stop herself, Helena collided with him, sending them both crashing to the floor. The world tilted as her phone skittered across the floor, the light extinguishing in an instant.
Warm steam from Alden’s shower mixed with the heat radiating from his damp skin, pressing him against her. She felt his heartbeat reverberate through her, leaving her momentarily disoriented.
“The power’s out. I… I’ll find my phone,” Helena stammered, her fingers groping blindly in the darkness. Before she could locate it, Alden’s warm hand closed over hers.
“What are you fumbling for?” His voice was low, husky, and full of curiosity in the dark.
It hit Helena all at once—her explanation was pointless since Alden couldn’t hear her without his implant.
Embarrassed, she tried to rise, but her head collided with something solid. Alden instinctively shielded her with one hand, his other arm circling her waist protectively.
A metallic object clattered across the floor, likely one of the decorative floor lamps. It grazed the back of Alden’s hand as it rolled away. Helena silently thanked the darkness, grateful it concealed her flushed face from him.
“Thank you,” she whispered softly against his ear. Though he couldn’t hear her words, she needed to voice them.
Their bodies remained intertwined, the space between them charged with an unexpected heat. To her surprise, Helena felt no anxiety or repulsion, only a comforting warmth. The rich aroma of winter cedar surrounded her, adding to the strange calm that filled her heart.
