His teeth clenched tight, as he was ready to strike once more. Suddenly, the attacker bent low and slipped free.
“How dare—I” Dorian started, expecting a fight. But to his shock, the man scrambled onto a ventilation ledge in the hallway and jumped out without a second thought.
Dorian’s words caught in his throat as he stood frozen, stunned by what had just happened.
A few seconds later, Helena and Valeria hurried to the window and leaned out to catch a glimpse of what was going on.
“Hey, don’t look!” Dorian called out, his voice tight with worry. Fearing the sight might scare Valeria, he pulled her close and shielded her eyes with his hand.
Helena saw the man hit the pavement, scramble up, and hobble toward a plain black car that peeled away in a flash.
“What are you doing? Let go of me!” Valeria regained her senses, pushing Dorian’s hand away and leaning out the window too. But the street below was empty. She shot a glare at Dorian and muttered, “It’s your fault! I didn’t see a thing p>
Though her words were sharp, Helena thought there was a hint of affection underneath.
The fierce man who had just looked like a leopard suddenly turned into a sulky pup. “I was only trying to protect you!” Dorian’s serious defense got nothing but an eye-roll from Valeria.
“Please. Have you forgotten what I do? I’m a psych doctor, but I’ve dissected humans in school, too. Thank you very much!” After teasing her boyfriend, she muttered with a shake of her head, “That guy’s crazy. Surviving a jump like that? He’s got a lot of luck on his side p>
The attacker had vanished long ago. There was no use dwelling on it.
