Early Friday morning, Betsey was already stationed by Nexus TV’s entrance.
A good number of people were aware that someone from the Wilson Group was sending a car to pick her up, so they naturally drifted over, curious to catch a glimpse.
Betsey’s self-important strut grated on Tessa’s nerves. She muttered something under her breath about how difficult Alden could be.
Instead of handing the interview over to Helena, who clearly had more experience, he kept her sidelined. Dominick didn’t stand a chance either.
As far as Dominick was concerned, staying far from Alden was a blessing in disguise.
Alden’s glare carried the weight of old resentment, as though he had personally wronged Alden.
The pounding in Helena’s head hadn’t let up, and the raw scratch in her throat was getting worse by the hour.
Even without a single message from Alden, she still felt bound to honor her word and visit his grandmother.
She looked over the route and chose to ride the subway for part of the trip before switching to a cab. It would cost less than taking a cab from start to finish.

After clocking out, she made her way toward the nearest subway station.
Through the windshield, Xavier spotted her figure darting off before he could even call out.
Inside the car, Alden caught sight of her too, and his eyes briefly widened.

Xavier gave no answer. He simply pulled into the curb outside Nexus TV and kept his hands on the wheel. The moment Betsey caught sight of the car, she rushed toward it with excitement. “Mr. Ashton, I’m all set p>
Xavier stepped out of the car, but he made no move toward the passenger door for Betsey.

Xavier’s face went stiff.
He never saw the setup coming. He had made the trip thinking he was there for Helena, only to end up face-to-face with another anchor trying to get close to Alden.
Alden’s expression was cold as stone. He stayed in the car and went straight to calling Helena. Twice. Both times, her line was busy.
Alden’s patience evaporated, and a chill settled in his eyes. So now Helena was brushing off his calls?
Alden didn’t speak a word. Unsurprisingly, Xavier stayed rooted where he stood and didn’t invite Betsey inside.

She had gone all out today. Her makeup was flawless, and underneath her thin trench coat, she wore a nude camisole, black stockings, and sleek low heels. Every detail had been carefully planned.
She’d been lingering at the building’s entrance for what felt like forever, hoping to turn heads. But now, her toes and fingers had gone stiff from the cold.

Betsey froze for a split second. She hadn’t seen Xavier’s bluntness coming at all.

Heat rushed to Betsey’s face. Whether it came from the cold or from sheer humiliation, even she wasn’t sure anymore.

She froze, completely blindsided.
Still keeping his tone measured, Xavier motioned for her to move aside, then quietly returned to the car.
Betsey remained frozen in place, helplessly watching the sleek luxury car disappear into the distance, leaving her alone in the chill. The sharp wind cut against her cheeks as the sound of her coworkers’ laughter echoed louder with each passing second.
Nothing made sense to Betsey anymore. She couldn’t figure out how it had all unraveled so quickly.
Just days ago, Xavier had sounded warm over the phone, as if he’d genuinely welcomed her.
And Alden—he was supposed to pick her up himself. Something must’ve gone off script.
Alden had specifically requested to meet the anchor from the press conference—so it had to be Helena. Betsey was certain that it was that scheming Helena who had ruined everything for her.
