Betsey stood frozen for a moment, dumbfounded.
Sister? From what she understood, Emily was an only child in the Simpson family. The idea that she had a sister was news to her.
Emily’s laugh broke the silence, cold and mocking. “You invited me here to pick on Helena, didn’t you? Thought you’d grab the exclusive interview with Alden while you were at it p>
The color drained from Betsey’s face. “You’re mistaken, Ms. Simpson. I had no idea you and Helena were sisters p>
Emily reached for Helena’s hand and held it tightly. “So now it’s out in the open. It doesn’t matter if Helena lives under our roof or not—she’s still our mother’s daughter, just like I am. That’s something you can’t undo. Maybe you’re used to pushing people aside to get what you want, but I’m warning you, you won’t lay a finger on her p>
It clicked for Betsey then. Helena and Emily, sharing the same mother, were half-sisters.
Still, if Helena had spent all those years struggling on her own and the Simpson family never lifted a finger to help, why were they suddenly pretending to be the best of sisters?

“You’re here about the photographs, aren’t you?” Emily replied, her voice low and serious. She paused before adding, “I don’t intend to keep secrets from you. Alden approached me before our scheduled wedding. He suggested that if I fled the wedding, it would spare our families the burden of an arranged marriage p>
A shadow fell over Helena’s face. “Alden was the one who advised you to flee p>
Emily seized the moment to plant seeds of doubt. “Yes, and I never imagined he’d go back on his promise. Instead of calling off the wedding, he married you and kept it a secret p>
Confusion swirled in Helena’s mind as she struggled to find the right words.
Emily quickly offered her interpretation. “Perhaps Alden was looking for someone easier to control—someone whose presence wouldn’t concern the Simpson family’s interests. It seems he found that in you p>

“Stop, Emily.” Helena’s voice shook as she interrupted.
“Look, I know our mother has always favored me over you, and I owe you a lot. That’s why I can’t stand by and watch you throw your life away. Please, consider divorcing Alden. I’ll help you and your father relocate and start anew p>
Emily was pushing Helena toward a decisive crossroads.
Only if Helena left would Alden give up on her.
Helena’s thoughts were in turmoil. She found it impossible to distinguish truth from deception in Emily’s words, and she had no idea how she was supposed to face Alden after this.
Just then, a phone call cut through the tension.
Helena answered quickly.
“Ms. Ellis, your father’s condition is critical. The doctors are doing everything they can. Please come to the hospital immediately,” a frantic voice said on the other end.
