Kristine’s sarcasm only sharpened when she caught his reaction. “Upset over a pig joke already? You used to treat me as though I were some kind of disease. If that’s true, why did you spend the entire night clinging to me p>
Colton froze. “Tell me when I ever treated you that way.” There was genuine confusion in his voice.
Kristine’s brows drew together. She hesitated — but Elyse had told her he never touched her because he believed he was out of her league.
A slight twitch passed over her face. Thinking back, she realized that nearly every accusation of that kind had come from Elyse alone.

There was no point in digging into the past now. Even if those stories had all been lies, Elyse still existed — and the fact remained that Colton had always chosen her.
“I’ll call a doctor for you,” he offered.
“That isn’t necessary,” she replied coldly, heading for the bathroom.
He watched her go, genuinely at a loss over how things had turned so cold.
His phone rang at that exact moment. Bobby’s name appeared on the screen.
“Mr. Yates, Mr. Edwards is coming to Gridron this Friday. He’d like to join the celebration dinner, if that’s alright p>
Colton pinched the bridge of his nose. The memory of how close Asher had come to marrying Kristine was enough to irritate him without trying.
“What’s the reason for his visit p>
“I have no idea p>
With a quick, frustrated motion, Colton loosened his tie. “That dinner is supposed to be for company people…” He trailed off, his attention drifting toward the closed bathroom door. “Alright. Let him join p>
Bobby hesitated, caught off guard by the sudden reversal, but recovered quickly. “Understood p>
Colton hung up and moved to the bathroom doorway.
Inside, Kristine was brushing her teeth, carrying on her morning routine without acknowledging him in the slightest.
“You’ll be at the company dinner Friday night,” he announced.
Another order delivered without room for discussion.
Her grip on the toothbrush tightened. “I’m not going p>
“You don’t have a choice p>
She pressed her teeth together, her voice barely above a whisper. “What if I refuse p>
“There is no other option.” With that, Colton left the room.
Furious, Kristine seized a glass from the counter and hurled it toward the doorway. “Colton, you absolute jerk p>
Downstairs, Colton paused at the sound of shattering glass, his jaw clenched — but he did not look back, and he walked out through the front door.
It took Kristine more than an hour to calm down before she finally made her way downstairs. The breakfast spread was still there, untouched and cold. Having grown used to fending for herself, she went into the kitchen. She had barely reached the refrigerator for eggs when she noticed Claire standing in the doorway.
Neither of them said a word. An uneasy silence hung between them.
