Elyse tried to say more, but her breath caught and a harsh cough overtook her.
This time, Colton didn’t move to comfort her. “You made it through surgery. You’re healing, and you’ll do just fine on your own. There’s no reason for me to stay at your side. This will be the last conversation between us. After today, there’s nothing left to say p>

Kristine remained hospitalized for two additional days, waiting until her body finally cooperated enough for her to walk on her own.
