Colton was about to pull away when Elyse spoke up. “You know what Ms. Flynn just said to me? She started talking about Kristine… Actually, never mind. It’s not worth repeating rumors p>

In a hesitant tone, Elyse continued, “She claimed Kristine only got every answer right because the director gave her a sneak peek. She said even she couldn’t answer some of those questions as a professional, but Kristine breezed through them. So it must have been the director helping her out p>
Colton shot Elyse a sharp look but kept his thoughts to himself. He slipped his arm free and walked straight out of the studio.
Seeing him go, Elyse stomped her foot in frustration.
Inside her office, Eve shut the door and turned to Kristine with a burst of excitement. “After seeing how well you did today, I’m certain you’ll be chosen to represent us at the cultural exchange event. That means you need to win first place p>

A flicker of displeasure crossed Kristine’s face. Her original reason for joining the show had been Eve’s promise that she could attend the relic exchange event. Now, listening to Eve, she realized she would have to fight for that chance on her own. A hint of annoyance hit her, though she kept it hidden.

Kristine gave a small nod, pushed open the door, and stepped out.
Leaving the TV station, she glanced back at the building, a new wariness settling in. She suddenly realized she needed to be more careful about whom she trusted.

A cold, familiar voice. She turned and saw Colton waiting. Kristine spun on her heel, ready to leave, but he caught her wrist before she could slip away.
“Colton—” Kristine noticed people watching and glared at him. “Let go of me p>
“If you don’t want everyone staring, just come with me,” Colton replied, steering her steadily across the street.
Seeing no other option, Kristine let him lead her into a quiet café. The time was already three in the afternoon, and only a handful of tables were occupied. Hoping not to attract attention, she chose a spot beside the window.
