When Colton remained silent and unreadable, Devin’s curiosity sharpened. “What exactly happened with Kristine? Didn’t you plan to announce today, at the celebration, that she would be your future wife? So what went wrong? Was she still unhappy? Don’t tell me she expected you to bring officials to the party and register the marriage on the spot. If that is the case, then maybe her first step should be cutting back on romance novels p>
“I didn’t claim Kristine would be my wife,” Colton said.
Devin sat still, visibly baffled.
Taking a slow sip, Colton began describing the night’s events to Devin, his words halting every so often.
When Devin finished listening, his mind spun with questions. He wasn’t sure whether to bring up Colton leaving the party for Elyse, or whether to address what was happening between Kristine and Asher first.
“So,” Devin said, pressing his fingers to his aching forehead. “What are you going to do now p>
Things had already gotten out of hand. Colton should let Kristine go. Holding on any longer would only make things worse between them.
Colton said nothing. He took another swallow of his drink and fixed his gaze on the bar, gripping the glass so hard his knuckles whitened. The glass shattered, but Colton paid it no mind.
Morning arrived.
After getting out of bed, Kristine noticed Colton wasn’t downstairs, which gave her enough comfort to head for breakfast. Once she finished eating, she decided to stay downstairs and turned on the television instead of going back up right away.
She had promised to meet Asher at eleven. It was only a little past eight. She still had more than two hours.

Just then, her phone began to ring.
An unknown number appeared on the screen. Though she hesitated, Kristine chose to answer.
“Hello, is this Kristine Green? This is Azariah Moran, the doctor who saw you for your stomach trouble last time. Do you remember me p>
“What are you calling for p>
“Here’s what happened. I came across your test results today and realized your case is a little complicated. Can you drop by the hospital for another checkup p>
“But p>
Azariah’s tone grew firmer. “Ms. Green, stomach problems can range from minor discomfort to life-threatening complications like cancer. You really should come in soon. I’ll be out of town tomorrow and won’t return for at least two weeks p>
A glance at the clock reminded Kristine of how Colton’s chronic stomach problems had been made worse by ignored early symptoms, his condition never improving. The hospital was only thirty minutes away, leaving her with plenty of time.
“I’ll go right now,” she said.
Once she ended the call, Kristine changed course and headed directly to the hospital.
She arrived on schedule, stepping into Azariah’s office half an hour later.
When Azariah saw her walk in, a strange look crossed his face for a moment, but he quickly collected himself. “Please, Ms. Green, take a seat and have some water. I’ll get your test form ready p>
After sitting down, Kristine accepted the glass offered by the nurse. “Thank you.” She didn’t take a sip, though, and simply set it aside.
Noticing that, Azariah exchanged a glance with the nurse.
“This water was developed by our hospital,” the nurse spoke up. “It’s designed not just to quench thirst, but to help nourish your internal organs. You might want to give it a try p>
