She averted her eyes, a quiet awkwardness settling over her. Earlier that morning, when she had gone back to campus to retrieve her bottle, she had thrown the notes away as well. Even then, she had sensed something was wrong — it had felt as though the notes had already been opened. When Colton mentioned Helen, she had assumed he had already found the hidden bottle along with the notes inside it. His reaction, however, made it clear that he hadn’t.

A faint, taunting smile touched Kristine’s lips. His concern for Elyse had blinded him to one key reality — even if she involved the police, Elyse would not be easy to bring down. The recording showed her role in the incident, but it wasn’t enough to secure a conviction on its own. That was exactly why she hadn’t reported it yet. She had made the right decision.
