Maybe then, Victor thought, the art of antique restoration would finally get the recognition it deserved.
A gentle smile crossed Kristine’s lips. She still preferred a life away from the spotlight — but this time, she decided to step forward.

After Victor and Eve departed, Kristine turned her focus back to the painting in front of her. Time slipped by unnoticed, and before long the clock struck ten. She massaged the stiffness from her neck, gathered her things, and made her way home.
As she neared her building’s entrance, a tall silhouette appeared in the distance. Even with his face hidden by darkness, Kristine recognized that figure immediately. Her brow knitted together as she tried to slip away unnoticed — but a cool voice behind her made her stop in her tracks.

Turning reluctantly, Kristine leveled a frosty glare at Colton. “Did you change your mind again p>
“Change my mind? How?” Colton took a step closer, and under the lights his sharp features looked softer, almost blurred by a gentle glow. Something unreadable flickered in his eyes, making it impossible to tell what was going through his mind.
“We both agreed never to see each other again,” Kristine reminded him.
“But you also promised not to leave Gridron p>
The words caught her off guard, leaving her momentarily silent. Her stare grew colder. “So why are you here p>
“Do I need an excuse to visit? We spent four years as a couple. With the three years you spent caring for me, that’s seven years in each other’s lives. Even though it’s over, doesn’t that mean something? We aren’t total strangers p>
Kristine immediately took a large step back, widening the distance between them. “Just say whatever you came to say p>
Colton’s frown deepened at her obvious desire to keep her distance. “Alright. If you’re willing to come back, I’ll let go of everything that happened recently p>
She almost couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Is that supposed to be a joke p>
“I’m serious,” Colton replied. “Since you already know about Patsy, let me tell you the truth. Seven years ago, Elyse donated a kidney to her. Patsy’s final wish was for me to take care of Elyse p>
Not a flicker of emotion crossed Kristine’s face. His confession meant nothing to her now.
