Goodwin moved to follow, and found the door shut quietly but firmly in his face.
He stood in the corridor and stared at the closed door, shaking his head slowly. Alma was an exceptionally difficult woman to impress.
Inside the room, Alma threw open a display case with obvious pride. “There. My prized collection. Tell me what you think — is there anything that catches your eye p>
Under normal circumstances, Kristine would have been genuinely captivated. But her mind was elsewhere entirely, running through ways to get Asher out of the house as quickly as possible.
She moved absently toward the window, and happened to glance down at the driveway just as a car rolled to a stop below.
The door opened.
A tall figure stepped out and straightened, and as he lifted his face toward the house, the sight of him hit Kristine like something physical — the air left her lungs, her heart stopped mid-beat.
It was Colton.
Kristine turned to Alma, her expression tight. “I need to find Asher right now. Something has come up. I’ll come back for the collection another time, I promise p>

Alma’s confusion shifted into alarm. “Kristine, stop. My father can’t stand being interrupted when he’s working. If they’re still in there, the deal isn’t finished. He’ll be furious p>

From the floor below, the butler’s voice carried up the staircase. “Miss Ford, a Mr. Yates is here to see you p>
The blood drained from Kristine’s face. Her heart hammered against her ribs.
Outside, Colton stood at the entrance in a black suit, his eyes sharp and cold as he regarded the man blocking his path.
Goodwin hadn’t expected to find Colton in Raskor. For a moment he simply stared — then a slow, satisfied grin spread across his face. “You’re here for Kristine, aren’t you p>
Colton’s expression flickered with something that confirmed it before he could stop it.
So it was true. Kristine had actually sought Goodwin out.

The living room was still and empty.
