“Have you lost your damn mind?” Devin yelled, pacing like a nervous wreck. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing? Asher is looking for her everywhere. He’s going to find her eventually. Do you really want to be his number-one enemy p>
“He asked for this,” Colton growled, his face set in stone and his tone brooking no argument.
Devin rubbed his aching head. “Whatever. I’m done trying to fix your life. Let’s talk about my project. I finally convinced your dad to let us open that tomb p>
Colton’s eyes sharpened, a flicker of genuine interest cutting through his exhaustion. “How did you get him to agree p>
“It was actually pretty easy. Remember Alma? I helped your dad and her become friends p>
A cold, disgusted smirk touched Colton’s lips. “I get the picture p>
“Anyway, I’ve got an expert checking out the site and picking the best date to start. I’ll call you when we’re ready p>
“Fine,” Colton replied.
Devin stared at his phone for a moment, debating whether to say more, then simply hung up. It was obvious that Colton and Asher were going to be at each other’s throats until one of them surrendered Kristine — and anyone could see that neither of them ever would.

Over in Evira, Alma looked at Asher. He was still in his wheelchair, his eyes red and raw from two sleepless days.
“Asher, please,” she said softly. “You haven’t slept in two whole days p>
“I’m not sleeping until I find Kristine,” Asher snapped, his voice like a frozen blade, draining the color from every face in the room.
Vinson stared at the floor, shame etched across his features. “This is all on me. I never should have let Ms. Green out of my sight p>
Asher gripped the arms of his wheelchair and drew a long, slow breath. “What about Davin? Have you found anything p>
“Nothing,” Nathan answered. He and Danica had dropped everything the moment they learned Kristine was missing and had come immediately.
“We still don’t know the exact location where they disappeared. Some nearby residents mentioned hearing three gunshots, but since gunfire isn’t unusual in Evira, no one thought much of it,” Nathan explained.
A flash of raw fury crossed Asher’s face. “Did you find any blood on the ground p>
“No. We brought in professionals to sweep the entire area, and they didn’t find a single drop,” Nathan replied.
“If shots were fired, someone had to have bled.” The warmth that usually softened Asher’s features was gone entirely now, replaced by something cold and dangerous. “Someone scrubbed the area clean p>
Nathan looked stunned. Behind him, Alma and Danica exchanged a disbelieving glance. Alma was particularly shaken — she had arrived less than an hour after Kristine called her. In that narrow window, someone had erased every trace so thoroughly that nothing remained.
How could anyone move that fast?
“Asher, that sounds impossible,” Alma said, thinking it through. “If a crew was out there cleaning, someone living nearby would have seen them. But no one we spoke to mentioned a thing p>
